A group of 18 friends decided to visit the cathedral at Speyer and after a lot of walking, this restaurant looked like a great place to have a lunch.We sat outside as inside was full. The restaurant is just adjacent to the Rhine river. As we sat, we could see the passenger boats ply by. My friends ordered lots of different types of drinks - mostly beer. For the main course I ordered Maultaschen, a turkey based ravioli. Price was €10.20. It wasn't want I expected but turned out pretty good even so. One can just have a beer and watch the barges on the river Rhein or have a full meal indoors or outdoors.The menue is varied but mainly traditional German, Bavarian and Pfaelzisch.I am vegetarian and I always find something delicious., e.g. Kartoffeltaschen. We arrived in the pouring rain, after taking a stroll along the river from Speyer Tecknic museum. When we got there the restaurant was full with only tables available outside. We took the last table under the umbrellas and order local beers which were very good and also food which was equally good. It rained and blow all while we were there but we stayed dry and had a good evening, Pity the sun didnt shine and that the Rhine River was so flooded, especially on the far side of the river bank. Well worth a visit but think it would be very busy on a sunny evening.They do not take any debit or credit cards, cash only.

After walking around Speyer, we wanted a little refreshment and our German friends suggested Alter Hammer. It was very busy, but there was a large table with only 2 people, so we asked if the 4 of us could join them - no problem! My friend said the people in the Pfalz region are very friendly and don't mind to share a table. It was a pleasant location to enjoy the beautiful day along the river, with so many out strolling and enjoying the day. I discovered the Obazda (a cheese onion spread) and pretzel - delicious!
We were defeated by the crowds at our first attempt to get close on a warm summer's evening but managed to get in for lunch a couple of days later. Strangely we found no disabled parking bays in the vicinity. The setting by the river is lovely, and the place was deservedly busy with people having a good time. The food was good- typical German- and the service especially friendly.
What a gem! We Googled this place before the trip and were not dissapointed. Great view over the river, good Eichbaum beer and tasty food with good price. Very popular with the locals so it can't be bad. Would go again.
Lovely location and lovely restaurant. Not sure I can actually add more... Ah yes very good value for money. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting good food at a reasonable price in a lovely spot.

Beautiful surrounding by the river, big terasse and many tables. Shadow and nice breeze from the river made it awesome on a hot, sunny day. Basic, good food. Salads are very big and tasty.
Bratwurst, sauerkraut and glass of wine only 11 euros. Nice setting by Rhein. I would highly recommend...
