The Annabel Lee Tavern is located in eastern Baltimore on the Canton/Highlandtown border, far from the Poe Museum, burial site, and statue in the western part if the city. Still that did not stop us from making the tavern the final stop on our day-long tour on the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's death. Inside and out the premises are covered with quotes from Poe. And special cocktails salute the writer. The signature Annabel Lee cocktail was a refreshing mix of vodka, peach nectar, lime and cava. The Black Cat had a coffee theme with actual coffee, espresso vodka, vanilla liquor, and kahlua. We shared two huge and tasty appetizers, barbecue chicken nachos and duck fat fries. These could have been meals on their own, so not surprisingly we took half home. The main dishes were both innovative as well as Baltimore themed. The Old Bay Tuna stake with tender asparagus served on grits was flavorful. The meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans provided traditional hearty fare. The curried vegetables with shrimp was colorful and seasoned just right. We shared a huge piece of apple pie piled with ice cream, whipped cream, and caramel sauce. Service was attentive and efficient. Street parking was fortunately available. The Poe and Raven-themed decor, especially along the long bar was entertaining. A great way to wrap up our day of Poe in Baltimore.
