I was so amazed by the last 2 star review, as it just doesn't fit our experience of the hotel Arcé or it's staff. Supper, service last night was excellent , which has been our consistent experience of visiting on our motorcycle over many years. We then heard the other side of the story from Coline Arcé, who was very upset by the post in question. The two sides don't tally, so maybe there were some problems of understanding on the night in question? All we can say is the standards here have been consistently excellent for all the many years we've been coming, so don't be put off by one review. We'll be back again next year.
This was one of the most awkward, uncomfortable dinners of our 16 day trip (which included other Michelin guide and Michelin star restaurants). First, they switched our wine with the table beside ours. Next, they overcooked the lamb we ordered. To our shock, the owner/manager came to our table to angrily argue that we were wrong. She then suggested that I eat my fish while my wife waited for her dish to be remade (I did not). To top it off, they then brought the wrong dessert. The mistakes were excusable, but the owner's reaction really soured the meal.
We ordered the house specialty trout. We were outside on the terrace dining. The chef walked out under our terrace and plucked the fish from a holding tank in the river below us. He lifted our lunch up to us still wiggling in the net. Moments later, the same fish were on our plates. A bit jarring but the freshest food we have ever eaten. Lovely shaded setting outside right above the river. We thoroughly enjoyed our Basque meal.
We ate our dinner outside in the area overlooking the river. The sound of the water made a pleasant backdrop to the meal as did the illuminated buildings and trees nearby. Food was excellent and made good use of local fare. We tried a local wine which was a little expensive but enjoyable.
