Do plan ahead and make a reservation: the place is superb. The entrance is like stepping back in time, with the timbered façade, and the dining room is large, with tables spaced well apart. The Menu Entre Amis is an excellent value, as it includes...three courses of gourmet dining for 45euro. We savored (sorry) the fois gras pate, the molten egg dish as firsts; excellent hake as main; and ta dumm! a Grand Marnier souffle that alone was worth coming for. The wine list had a wide offering and service was good. This was one of our two favorite places in Bayonne: the Auberge had a dignity about it, not a trendy vibe.
I can now fully understand why auberge du cheval blanc lost her michelin star in 2018. a Michelin-star restaurant is over a fully braided experience, including not only excellent and sophisticated dining, but also high-quality services. I explained by an e-mail several times that. I would travel to baskenland to remember and whispered our silver wedding to make a reservation there on 5th October to lunch. they did not even worry to say no. rude and disgusting. then some people in France wonder why there is a very negative stereothype on the French volk!
I've been fed here for more than 35 years and has never been disappointed. the warm egg starter, the calf or the heke and soufflé are all a joy and at 45euros for the set is a good value. the chief and the owner jean claude met. a conscious decision to give up the michelin star, as most requirements do not increase culinary, over table etc. and cost. in my experience there are few finer restaurants in the area
full markers round, we stayed on the menu of the day and thought it was all 10/10. also an excellent service and a change to talk to the personal in this family-run restaurant. Note: parking in bayonne not the easiest, so allow...bit the time to find a place and go on the side street to the restaurant.
