We were famished after three hours "hiking" the adjacent Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux and came upon the miraculous Auberge de Maubert. For 18 euros, the two of us enjoyed a five-course home-like lunch consisting of (a) salade aveyronnaise for both of us; (b) an omelet forone and two delicious chicken croquettes for the other; (c) excellent beef stew for one and tripe the old-fashioned way for the other, both accompanied by perfectly cooked frites maison; (d) a cheese board with a 5-cheese selection of which we could have as much as we wanted; (e) simple desserts - crème brulée and chocolate mousse. Copious portions, almost too much. Good, rapid service, initially inside overlooking the family garden, and then the cheese and dessert outside in front, to get away from the not-particularly-loud-but-constant-motor-mouth conversation of the group of 2 older French motorcycle couples at the next table inside. Simple, friendly, homey service. One doesn't find many such places these days.

This restaurant is on the small road leading to the Chaos of Montpelier le Vieux and mainly seems to serve those, like us, heading for there. It is a chalet style of building very informal with extensive indoor and outdoor eating areas and ample free car parking. The service was welcoming and friendly and the menus simple but with quite enough choice. The food is everyday, straightforward, well-cooked from good ingredients and the drinks list was quite adequate. We had pork chops, others had beef stew or roast chicken. All excellent for what they were, simply served with vegetables, salad and chips. A good, simple, reasonably priced, fairly quick meal in attractive rural surroundings. Ideal fox lunch on the way to or from the Chaos.
