My daughter and I visit this area of the Allgau every year (8 years now) for skiing and on every trip we try out a new restaurant. I know Nesselwang quite well and I looked on Trip Adviser - picking Baren as it had such good reviews. The premesis itself are marvellous, very tidy and warm and full of local bits 'n' pieces - also the restaurant was full (6.45 p.m. Friday night) a good sign. Enroute from the Zurich airport to Oberammergau, Germany, my wife and I by chance stopped at the Gasthof Baren in Nesselwang (Bavaria) for lunch. What great fortune. We were personally greeted by the owner who gave us a terrific history lesson regarding the building and business as he was particularly proud that Baren had served many American officers and servicemen during WWII.Our meal was simply outstanding. During our 5 visits to this area we only came across one so-so restaurant so the competition is very strong in the local food restaruant business. This year we had great luck of finding this little gem while on vacation in Pfronten in January. The place was beautifully decorated with the Christmas theme and the big, warm oven added to the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant. Very handy also for doing some shopping before or after as Aldi Sud shares the parking lot with the restaurant. The food is very tasty and the prices are not high. This restaurant was recommended by our hotel (Explorer Neuschwanstein, see separate review) for some authentic bavarian food. I had a pork knuckle in mind when we went there but unfortunately, they only serve that on certain days of the week and did not have it when we were there. However, the pork roast I chose instead was very nice, too. My wife had a very fresh trout. The restaurant brews its own beer which went nicely with our food. Reasonably priced. Recommended - we would come back if our ways lead us to Nesselwang again.

They call it traditional or stereotypical; but since Baren was, another review hearty bavarian food. The staff was stereotypically dressed in traditional clothing, pork, chicken and spetzel. Everyone had a good food and good beer. The staff seemed to have a hard time with our orders ~30 people for a planned party). And like most people in the area, their English was better than my German! I'd come back, but only after I tried everything else in town at least once.
I wasn't expecting a lot considering my hotel was way overrated by reviewers, but I was really pleasantly surprised that this restaurant is not overrated. The food is delicious. The atmosphere charming and the service was efficient, friendly and helpful. I need a nap now that I've finished but I will have pleasant dreams.
On the main strasse we enjoyed a schnitzel and cordon bleu with wine and bier. The inside is cozy and the service was good. Feels like family run. Nothing overly special, just a good meal. Parking is not a problem as they also use the Aldi store parking lot in the evening.
Walked in without a reservation. Restaurant was packed but we only had to wait a few minutes to get a table from a very busy waitress. The food was typical German of very good quality, we enjoyed every minute of the evening.

We was really surprised about the taste of the food. Nice decorated restaurant. Good Variety of food on the daily menu. Friendly service, we certainly go there again if we are in the area.
Very different bavarian experience, very cozy and awesome food with great serving portion and fair price. And a very sweet waitress :) VERY RECOMMENDED!!
