Bart's Place has got a lot going for it. To start with, it's a fish and chipper, which automatically makes it a lunchtime winner. Then there's the location. Perched on a low bank, with an aspect across a low traffic road to a waterside park, things couldn't get much better. There're tables out front or sheltered tables in the park opposite, which features an excellent kid's playground, and a discretely placed toilet block.Being a beautiful day we elected to eat right on the waterfront, with its pleasing view to Wellington Point across the bay, and just enough foot bike and scooter traffic on the pathway to keep us pleasantly engaged with the other families enjoying the day. WE had a beer or a glass or two of wine , which might have been technically against the law, but on a weekday its a quiet little place. If we'd chosen to eat at one of the tables back at Bart's we could have drunk out of glass rather than plastic at no extra cost. The food... Of the 4 of us 2 had standard fish and chips, or rather fish and potato scallops (the Queensland term for lightly battered and deep fried discs of potato), and Tricia and I opted for fish burgers, which came of Turkish rolls. The rolls were quite substantial and about 15 cm long and the piece of fish covered the entire length, as did the fresh salad. Our friends, not the easiest pair to please, were very happy with their meal, as were Tricia and I, and needless to say it was all very light on the pocket, and generally therapeutic. There are not a lot of tables at the restaurant, or for that matter in the park, and the whole place really buzzes along on weekends, families claiming the tables and picnickers spreading ground sheets and little kids running around, all very lovely. So get there early, or better still, go midweek if you can.Oh! an one last thing. The staff at Bart's are lovely, relaxed, friendly people, who could be from central casting, so beachside fish and chipper are they.
