Where are the Soul Food spots in SGV vicinity??? A friend drove in from Palm Springs and we were looking for a soul food spot without having to go to LA and had to settle on BB's Cafe in Covina. I tried their food years ago and was somewhat disappointed so I never went back til today. So I'm thinking, they're still in business, maybe they got better...NOT!! I feel so bad in writing this because the hostess Michelle was sooo sweet, and funny, and accommodating. And she asked for a Yelp review. Canned yams, canned greens, at least that's what it tastes like. Almost no batter on the catfish. The shrimp, however, were delicious. Hush puppies which I don't usually eat were delicious. BB, the owner, and DJ, her amazing employee, run a lovely boutique spot right in central downtown. From the moment you walk in, you 're greeted with welcoming smiles and the inviting smell of delicious food that draws you right in. I tried their Big Daddy Burrito, and let me tell you--it was absolutely phenomenal. Stuffed with perfectly smoked meats and just the right amount of sauce, it 's the perfect BBQ burrito. Great restaurant in a large strip mall of sorts anchored by a Vons. The restaurant itself is on a corner, and at least on a Sunday at noon, is the only establishment visibly open with a small crowd waiting outside. Once you put your name down, you wait around, but not for too long, and there are seats inside as well as a small strip of tables outside. The service is prompt, professional, and friendly. The menu is a QR code, and coffee is brought promptly and filled regular. I always get the classic Eggs Benedict, which is always solid.
Serves was excellent but food was very disappointing. I went in here thinking I was going to get really good food based on all the positive reviews. Long story short, the peach cobbler was gross and watery, the baked beans tasted like they were straight from the can, green beans were plain, yams were okay, the catfish had no flavor, and the pulled pork sandwich was dry and flavorless. Excellent restaurant. Food was amazing! The woman working the front window and delivering food to us was the nicest and friendliest person I have met in any business in awhile. Did I mention the food was out of this world. While is a small business with limited indoor dining spots, that should not detract one from visiting. Its a short, 5 minute walk from the Metrolink station and we plan on repeat visits.
