I love french onion soup and get it everywhere I go. I specifically tried this place because there were so many good yelp reviews about the onion soup. I really don't understand why there are good reviews, it tasted nothing like French onion soup. It was thick more creamy and lost the onion flavor and instead took on a whole different flavor that was not enjoyable to me. It also didn't look like one of the yelp pic (the one with the cheese all over) Instead it just had a small amount of cheese on the bread and not any else and I couldn't even taste the cheese it had no flavor. After reading the amazing reviewing on yelp we decided to try this bistro in a quiet and charming neighborhood. Appetizer 3 stars chicken pate generous portion with great taste! Escargot good sauce but the meat was on the smaller side. Main course 2.5 stars mussels besides sandy, the sizes of meat were as small as the escargots. I am not kidding! Confit duck leg one bite into the duck and i could taste the stale oil. I did not eat the duck and only fed on the beans and potatoes. I really like the location, service and the ambiance of the restaurant but it did not make up the below average main courses.
This authentic French bistro, located so close to a Gold Line station, is always a wonderful experience with its outdoor dining. My wife generally orders the mussels. We usually start with the olive tapenade which we both love. I have sampled the steak, the burger, and the bolognese sauced pasta. For those who prefer California chardonnay, they serve a Talbot. I choose one of the French reds. The outdoor dining is dog friendly. The only reason there was noise was the adjacent Farmer's Market and attendant foot traffic.
Delicious traditional French cuisine with outside dining in a quiet setting in South Pasadena. Friendly servers, delicious food. Lot's of butter--but it's French so that's what you expect (and want), right? My wife and I shared two appetizers and an entree, and we were very satisfied. We have had the tarte tatin in the past and it was amazing.
Bistro de la Gare is my go-to for a quality restaurant experience. The food is always perfect in preparation and presentation, the staff and Chef Bruno are always attentive and welcoming. I love the casual comfortable elegance that they always create.

The fish was inedible and soaked in way too much sauce. The clams were mediocre at best and the kale salad was the best thing we ordered. I would not recommend this restaurant
One of my favorite places. We absolutely adore the authentic French cuisine.Cannot complain about one thing.
