One always gets a bit excited when all the staff are Japanese and even more so when a good percentage of the customers are as well. This is modern and fancy Izakaya fare with some adventurous edges. The Agedashi tofu is subtly infused with crab meat and the Teriyaki sauce has levels of anchovy excitement which lift it above the regular sweet/sticky delight. The menu is full of interesting options both cold and cooked. The atmosphere was very Japanese, with native punters yakking away with the sushi chef while sipping Suntory whiskey.The staff were friendly and attentive but obviously on student visas. I actually stopped coming here not long after they received their Good Food Guide rating. The portions got smaller and the attitude especially from the owner Sato became less than inviting. Returning with 2 other couples tonight the insult of being asked to pay 50 cents for Japanese chilli pepper - shichimi - was a new low. It's not the 50 cents, I have travelled the world and spent extensive time in Japan as well as dined at many Japanese restaurants here and overseas. Never ever have I been asked to pay for this condiment. When I asked how much salt and pepper was they didn't answer. Asking if I could BYO my own condiments next time the waitress apologised and said the boss is watching her...

Unusual serving of Japanese food, mostly fried, served tapas style.We enjoyed an entree of quartered sweet corn with salt which was v fresh and tasty. The Tororo-isobeage (Fried Mountain yam in seaweed) was a bit oily and salty whereas thesatsuma-age (fish patties) were yummy. The salmon spring rolls with meso, pine nuts and cream cheese were freshly prepared and crunchy but the creaminess in a spring roll was a little unusual. The king fish tempura with cherry tomato inside was good but I'm unsure whether the tomato complimented this dish. Went to this restaurant for a meal prior to going to the movies. Whilst I like Japanese food I am aware that it can be a culinary adventure and that the presentation can sometimes overtake what is on the plate. Well that's about it here, the serves are that small that it was hard to tell if the quality of the food was good or bad. We had some spring rolls and 2 other dishes, without alcohol or desert, and it came to $75 for 2. Each dish felt like a sample of what they could make and I felt that the serves were embarrassing small for the price they charge. BTW the choc top and the popcorn at the movies was ok!! Yes the service is dippy but the food is divine. Modern Japanese fusion.They do the best sashimi and sushi in the street and they have some stiff competition.I love the way they mix flavours - the salmon and cheese is my favorite. I love the fact that you can try new things here. The sake menu is good.Its true that they have some challenged waiting staff and getting what you want may take some patience but the staff are good humoured and trying to be helpful. And they are attentive.I always have fun and always spend too much (I over order cause its good).I would go here every night.

Such a brilliant Japanese restaurant in elsternwick Creative menu with such great taste. Great selection of hot & cold Tapas dishes including sushi & sashimi and if you are a fan of sake & Asian beer you are in a good place.Had the soft shell crab roll which was great including the seared scallops carpaccio, Oven baked Salmon w Yuzu sweet miso. Tasty cheese on top, king fish wonton ravioli which were all so yum - the wonton ravioli was Amazing!!And to finish off must have is the brown rice tea Burle so light & yumGreat staff so warm & hospitable

Cosy welcoming space. Warm attentive efficient service. Delicious tastes to share. Unusual innovative choices such as a Japanese style mini pizza. The scallops are delicious and tender. Brown rice tea has a delightfully nutty fresh taste. Very reasonably priced. Reserva una mesa ahora

He serves a spicy chirashi dish only at lunch time, which is my best meal in Melbourne. Have that with a side of nigiri with salmon , tuna, white fish. You could be anywhere in world and you won't get better. Actual place is a little weak but food is awesome.

Everytime I visit this venue, which is weekly, the service and the quality of food just amazes me. Japanese Cuisine thus fused always sates a hungry stomach. Keep it up and thank you. Please try the sparkling Sake.
