We wish we had seen some of the reviews for this restaurant prior to going. We decided to go to the bistro. The maitre d'hote was very rude and made us feel most unwelcome from the start. My mother ordered the civet de lievre. She is French and knows very well how this particular dish should be made. It was inedible. My wife and I both tried it and agreed it was disgusting. The meat was far too dry and the sauce had been reduced far too much. It was more like a paste than a sauce. She did not continue to eat it. To be fair the other waiting staff were very pleasant and dealt with it by offering a free desert. I complained and had the meal taken off our bill considering how bad it was. They e...

My French wife and I (I've lived in France for over 30 years) knew the Bas Breau restaurant back in its glory days when it was one of the best in France. We had not been back for a while, so decided to see whether it was still, as the Michelin Guide likes to say, worth a detour. It has two restaurants, one they call "gastronomic" and a small bistrot. We went to the bistrot. My wife had the civet de liévre (hare in sauce) and I ordered the magret de canard (duck breast). Her hare was so full of bones it was virtually inedible, and the mashed potato dish accompanying it was obviously out of a box. My tiny portion of duck was swimming in some kind of disgusting oil. We decided to cut our losses...

We visited this restaurant whilst staying in the Fontainebleau area. The establishment is located in a small and very old picturesque village. The ambiance in the rear garden where dinner was served was excellent, service could not be faulted and the quality and presentation of the food, although expensive, was top quality. This meal was taken on the last day of our one month holiday in France and Spain and was very memorable. Dinner was accompanied by 5 men dressed in hunting clothing who serenaded us with hunting horns, they perform on the first Thursday of the month, every month. We did not stay at the hotel, we just hade dinner in the evening

Very elegant dining room with reasonably priced dinners in the Bistrot restaurant at Hotel. Fantastic appetizers. The salad had smoked thin sliced canard, 2 small heated brie on cracker, with corn and light vinaigrette. The most amazing figs stuffed with foie gras and drizzled with honey and served with toast and fruit chutney/jam. Dinner duck breast with roasted mixed vegetables with reduction sauce was prepared well with varying combination of flavors which went well together. Fromage plate had fantasic aged brie, ashed chevre, aromatic munster.

We were here in the spring and this winter revisit did not disappoint! The service was prompt and personal. The food continues to respect the past and probe into the future, while staying current. It was unfortunate that a boisterously loud group, apparently having a wine-tasting, chose to mar the forest calm that normally enhances the ambiance of this vintage hostelry. One of the last vestiges of the Barbizon of yesteryear...soothe your soul, spend some time here.

Expect to dine as if you were in a gastronomic restaurant with attentive and friendly service staff. The food was actually better than expected and I will certainly come back to explore the other items on the menu after which , I will update my review. To keep it short, beautifully presented dishes with great flavors. A bit pricy but nothing to be shocked about. Wines I selected (by the glass) were not great, a bit too old and stale atmosphere. Minor cons.

In the heart of the village where Robert Louis Stevenson found inspiration when writing, this bistrot is warm and serves well prepared fare to satisfy every taste. Service is friendly too... worth a stopover for lunch. There is a set menu which is sensibly priced.A table away from the window is better so that the sun does not shine in your eyes.

Actually we have not eaten here - after 30 minutes we were still sitting in an empty room on a dirty table full of stains and bread crumbs waiting for the guy to take our orders and hopefully to clean our table. We felt like we have interrupted the waiter's daydream and were not welcome at all.

I had the chance to have a dinner here with some colleagues. Nice experience for what concern the food, well cooked and served. Warm atmosphere and comfortable furniture. Unfortunatly service quite slow and waitress but a bit distracted.
