We dined at Bistrot L’Alchimiste on Rue Saint Denis located nearly in the shadow of the 15th century Cathedral (construction of the church began in 1434, on the site of a Romanesque cathedral, and took 457 years to finish! It’s worth a visit while you’re in Nantes) This charming and small restaurant is located on a small side street and could be easily overlooked. It had a great rating on Trip Advisor and looked charming when I checked it out on the walk to my hotel from the Musee d’Arts de Nantes where our art museum association meetings are being held. Went here (for dinner) as wanted modern French cooking but without the massive price tag and we were very pleased. Small, select menu and everything sounded delicious. We had 3 courses each with wine paring plus a cheese board to share and this came to €140 including tip (in my opinion, very reasonable). The quality of the food was excellent, the portions large and really nice twists on classic dishes. Having spent the morning walking around Nantes taking in the sights we were both looking forward to enjoying good French cuisine .On the way to the cathedral we discovered l'Alchimiste ,what a find .A small intimate bistro serving superb French food with a very attentive owner who spoke excellent English she had spent some time in Bristol) who told us about the local wine we were drinking
