I recently dropped by the restaurant called The Cafe de Balme at Magland near Les Carroz d'Araches in the Grand Massif. I have seen the restaurant from the main road (D1205) in the valley on the route up to Les Carroz. The restaurant might be tricky to find at first, as it is off the D1205 and past another restaurant, Le Tindaris.The restaurant is quite unique as doubles as a kitchen store, selling upmarket kitchen utensils and metal-ware. The restaurant is only open for lunch menus, and offers a 3 course lunch at 21 E, with a selection of 3 to 4 starters, and similar choice for main course and dessert.The staff were very friendly and helpful. We got by speaking a mix of French and English....
I have passed this place quite a few times and always make a mental note to go back and eat so just before christmas 2015 my partner had a day off and the senility had a day off and I remembered Cafe de Balme and off we went .we arrived and the place was full (christmas and generally a busy place I guess) - anyway they found a spot for us sharing with another couple who turned out to be great fun. We ordered - I had a special dish of theirs, the Tomato tart tatin and it was good! I can't remember what my partner had for a starter but it was nice - Mains were Gigot of lamb and we all had that, it was good served with Dauphinoise potatoes and a light jus, simply presented and nice. My dessert...

Café de Balme, Magland, after a 20 minutes drive from Chamonix in the Arve valley you will discover a traditional yellow family house dedicated to the kitchen and home furniture. You will find high quality kitchen accessories, La Cornue and Aga cookers and some very interesting Italian furnitures. The center of the place is a kitchen where they serve for lunch only, a comfort 3 courses French family menu, with a choice of 3 starters, 3 main course and 3 deserts. This restaurant is based on the concept of eating in the kitchen with all the utensils hanging around you: utensiles, pots pans, even the furnace are items that can be bought. On the first floor you can visit a showroom on kitchen design.. Quite a ground-breaking concept.. and lovely atmosphere. The owners are friendly ladies proposing home-cooking using all these items. (they apparently also provide cooking courses)
Have eaten here several times and always had a good lunch. Make sure to book in advance as you will be lucky to get in on the off chance, sometimes they run out of choices but as the food is freshly cooked every day I would rather that than have something thats been hanging around in the fridge for a day or too! Nice staff and a beautiful shop to walk around
We didn't expect such originality when we dropped into this restaurant. We were greeted with a very warm welcome, the set menu was interesting and home made. The fact the you can buy all the items you use is a very interesting concept. I would certainly recommend it. Lady running the restaurant was a fun character. Reserva una mesa ahora
