Ask anyone in Quillan for their favourite restaurant in the town and the chances are they will tell you to try the Cafe de la Gare. Marie-Claude runs the show, and is often seen sitting in the main restaurant ironing the napkins and tablecloths. She is ably assisted by her brother, who does the cooking and a very friendly waitress. The menu does include offal recipes, as is often the case in good French restaurants. We tried pigs trotters and andouilette - both perfectly cooked. But it also does salt cod dishes, and excellent steak and chips. I had the best lasagne I have eaten for a long time there, excellent crudités and finished off with good, homemade ice cream. The atmosphere was very memorable, with lots of knick-knacks and ornaments dotted all around the high-ceilinged room. A local folklore group had a great time eating here before their street performance. And a father came in to feed his young daughter too. Not to be missed. If you're not used to French food, don't worry about the offal dishes, as there's lots more to tempt you, and good omelettes and chips are also available.

First of all, I have to admit that we only had a drink at the bar, but the place was packed. Very old-fashioned, quirky room with enormous mirrors. Man and wife establishment with lots of old world charm. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and if I ever went back on the 1 euro train from Carcassonne I would definitely try to eat there.

I live in the area and we have never had a bad meal here - everything here is home-made on the premises, the menu is not extensive but comprises of a good selection of classic choices. The decor doesn't look like it has been changed since the 1950s and it is the best value for money you'll get in town - love it!

Truly old fashioned and tasteless food. We all had something different and none of us fished, it really was that bad! Probably the worst restaurant food I've ever had.
