Right off the bat, the back wall of the eatery backs on to E. Hatings alley. Small diner that tries to be classier than it is. The entry is too small and sudden. Exterior awning would help waiting patrons. Some window dressing and better lighting would make for a more pleasant dining experience as vagrants stare and yell as they go by. That said, request a table further away from the window or you'll be watching drug/alcohol-fueled antics the whole time. Our server pushed so-called Jamaican dishes that fail to impress. What a great vibe this place has. The music, the decor and the food are fabulous. The location is at ground zero of the downtown east side, with a very sketchy alleyway just steps away but you would never know it when you step into Calabash. My sister recommended the place, and I am glad she did. I had the vegetarian platter which is an outstanding mix of rice, vegetables, salad and plantains. Every part of the dish was perfect. I also had a rum cocktail. The rum drinks are not cheap but they certainly do not skimp on the alcohol content. This was my second time visiting Calabash while in Vancouver and it was very disappointing. Cold food delivered to table. They expected us to pay full price for dessert items, but they had no ice cream due to not being able to keep it cool. Definitely not real Jamaican cuisine. Truly disappointing and a waste of money. Oh and the view were the homeless eating off the ground outside.
Ryan, our server and bartender, was engaging, helpful, and excellent at intuiting our needs. The cocktails and food were well-priced and delicious. The transition from dinner to club was smooth and we appreciated being able to keep a corner table for our coats and purses. The music and overall club vibe was inclusive and fun. Ownership of the restaurant changed last year and the changes are substantial. Food and drinks are still good but nowhere near as good as under the previous owners. Service was abysmal. Our table got food all at different times. Entrees came before appetizers. Appetizers came before drinks. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.
