3 /5 Reseña

Generally, it's difficult to find authentic Southeast Asian food in Europe, except perhaps in London, and Las Palmas is no exception. I had been to Casa Malasia a long time ago, wasn't very impressed and had stayed away. Restaurants come and go here at an astonishing pace but Casa Malasia have managed to survive all this time so I thought they must be doing something right. With this thought in mind, I gave it a second chance. I left with a similar disappointment. There are 3 main branches of Malaysian (and Singaporean) food: Malay, Chinese and Indian, and an off shoot: Peranakan (a fusion of those three, more or less). The best Malay food is best cooked by Malays, Chinese by Chinese, and so on. Perhaps herein lies the flaw. Casa Malasia isn't run by Malays so possibly, my choice of dishes was wrong. None of them had even the slightest hint of chillies, an indispensable ingredient in SE Asian cooking. I thought I'd try the prawn satay but the satay sauce had cabbage thrown in yucks! What a way to ruin a sauce! Of course, I didn't expect anything close to the authentic Malaysian satay sauce, but this was en embarrassing imitation. The Singapore fried noodles were too dark and soggy but edible. The stuffed tofu could have passed off, perhaps, if it had some authentic peanut sauce; that would have made it something akin to tahu goreng, but it came with some kind of soya sauce dressing. A rather bland concoction, I'm afraid. The roti prata (or canai) had a flavour that can remind you of the genuine one, but doesn't come with what is an essential accompaniment the curry sauce. Finally, the nasi lemak (coconut rice), was somewhat of a lame duck. It had some coconut, but the rice wasn't of the right quality and it came with 3 slices of cucumber and a little sambal sauce, except that it didn't taste much of sambal. All in all, it was another huge disappointment and I'm afraid I won't be back in a hurry. If you aren't familiar with Malaysian cooking, and don't like spicy food, then Casa Malasia might just be up your street.

Nice place of malasian cuisine. The owner was really nice to our kids. She recommended some nice different food. Price was excellent. The restaurant is in La Minilla which is situated in a residential Area, but it is worth to try.
