The people doing the service were a bunch of amateurs: they really don't have a clue as to how to run a restaurant. There were at least two waiters too many, as a result they returned almost every used plate separately back into the kitchen. The waiters seemed selected for their youth and inability to smile: a feature that appeared to be assigned to the red shoes they were wearing.The clientèle had to wait a long time for some attention, they were presented with the wrong plates, drinks were forgotten and if one put down the fork after finishing the excellent meal, it already made it's way into the kitchen even though some of the company were still eating. I arrived 17.45 for the visit of Zollverein industrial complex and could see just the very beginning of it. Frankly deceived not to be allowed to see more, I walked the huge premises around and surprisingly found this fancy Casino restaurant open. The place had all to be gloomy but is warm, welcoming and unique. Nice layout, intelligent lightening, good furnitures mixed in a concrete high ceiling hall amount pipes, steam machines and coal conveyors. The menu seemed great and people however busy getting ready for the night services were quite solicitate... Visiting Zollverein as part of business trip and we were taken to the Casino Restaurant and I must say that this was great. They served homemade bread and special butters / oils and for starter I had a soft cheese, asparagus and oyster mushrooms which was well presented and tasty, I then had risotto in a port sauce with scallops which were fresh and lovely on the palate. Finished with coffee as I'd been filled with great food. Service was excellent and my colleagues (French, Japanese, Turkish, Finnish & German) also enjoyed their experience.

It is set in an old coal mine but this made it a unique environment.The food was beautifully presented and the waiter was genuinely keen to make our stay enjoyable.They do a "surprise" menu where you let the waiter know things you do or don't like e.g. Fish and the chef makes a surprise for you. My husband really enjoyed his courses. I went for the listed menu and wished I'd been braver as it made it more exciting not knowing what you were going to get.The bread was delicious and the menu was "grown up" and refined. The special atmosphere is recreated through the ambience of the modern renovated former coal recovery factory. The stuff is very friendly and helpful. The food is very well cooked and composed. There is not a wide choise of the dishes, but the daily list can satisfy every demand. There is always a 5-course menu available. Also they have a nice wine list from all over the world. Very nice and new experience, really loved the athmosphere of quitness and frozen force of the old technology.

I went here with a group of business colleagues on a Thursday evening. It was a little quiet (the waiter informed me that on Friday they are booked out), so the atmosphere was subdued. The food was good quality and came relatively quickly, but there were only two people serving the whole restaurant, so it took some time to get extra drinks. It was my second visit and hopefully not my last.

This is surprisingly a very classy restaurant in the bowels of this coal mine with a rich menu and excellent service. Tried some ostrich here for the first time but even other items, dessert and wine were great.

The setying is unique and it is recommended for those keen on industrial archeology. The restaurant is although overpriced for the food quality they offer, in my view.
