Char Steakhouse Putnam Valley

I am always on the lookout for a new steak restaurant, so I headed north to Putnam county. I wanted to try Char after getting fed up excuse the pun) with overpriced steakhouses down county and in NYC where prices for one person with an App, bone in porterhouse or rib eye, a side and three drinks can put you back 125 or more w/o tip. Well Char won the battle for my with a 83 tap at the bar with 3 happy hour priced drinks ice cold Brooklyn Lager 6, two glasses of a pretty good Malbec 6 and my favorite a Josh Cabernet 8. Four of us had a great meal last night , our knowledgeable and super pleasant waitress name Nikki, answered all our questions and plus... Drinks were excellent. My compliments to the bartender. Bread and water was brought to our table promptly. Now for the meal. Started with, a yummy onion soup, a fresh salad and delicious Oyster Rockefeller share by two of us. Now for the piece of resistance! NY strip steak with Au poivre sauce; comes with 3 other choices of sauces, and two vegetables choice. It was cooked to perfection medium rare, on the rare side. HAVE to give this establishment a whopping 5 stars, which is a rare occurrence. From the second our party of six walked in to the finalization of six separate checks, there was nothing to comment negatively on. The waiter was very attentive visiting the table quite often including taking back an appetizer that my friend wanted to opt for something else! No lifting of an eyebrow or hesitations were made. I highly recommend the Prix Fix meal for $29.95 from app to dessert/coffee/tea. Can't go wrong! There were many choices of each category which to choose from! Something for everyone! We made a reservation on a Friday night, we were sat immediately, and the place was busy already. We got 3 different appetizers. The bacon strip was a bit too chewy for our liking, but calamari and the lamb pops were both so delicious. I ordered a chartini, which is a dirty martini with 5 bacon wrapped cheese stuffed olives. This alone felt like an appetizer- and worth it! We loved the atmosphere however it got pretty loud as the night went on. The steak wasn't bad, however the fries on the side weren't great- I would have replaced the side with the steak. I had the Ravioli special with Shrimp- it was a nice portion filling. Once you get this far out of major metropolitan areas it's gonna be tough to find a decent steakhouse. Started off with not so pleasing appetizers: baked clams were dry and over cooked, grilled octopus was also dry and obviously over cooked. I think they boiled too long prior to grilling. Asian calamari with the wasabi sauce was good. Crabcakes with the spicy remoulade was decent Ribeye steak was mediocre ordered it medium rare, and it came out more well done. Creamed, spinach was more cream than spinach. A mediocre dining experience won't go out of my way to go back

Ate there twice. First time was OK. Same 4 went last Friday. My wife had Chicken Martini. Sauce was horrible. I split a Tomahawk steak for two with ny buddy. 80% fat. Waitress said marblie is normal. I cut the piece straight through and it was all fat. She disappeared. Owner handed us the check and smiled when he acknowledged we may be better with a leaner cut. No chef in a real steakhouse would ever serve that steak. The waitress and the owner shrugged it off. No business sense and definitely no class.

The food and service were outstanding. However, my vodka and orange juice had a strange taste, which I suspect was due to the use of canned juice instead of fresh. I ended up not drinking it. The restaurant was quite crowded, and the noise level made it difficult for our small group of four to hold a conversation, making it quite uncomfortable.

The atmosphere was pleasant, and our server provided outstanding service. Our party of three ordered a Caesar salad that was decent, a beet salad that was more enjoyable, an excellent lobster bisque, and the night’s special—a small tomahawk ribeye that we shared. I brought my girlfriend here to celebrate her birthday, and Char Steakhouse exceeded our expectations! The filet mignon and NY strip were absolutely delicious. She really enjoyed her watermelon martini too! The atmosphere was charming, and our waiter, Michael, was exceptional. We will definitely return!
