A favorite stop on the way to Chicago. My husband and I traveled from central PA to Chicago several times a year from 2003 to 2007 while our son was attending Wheaton College. We hated eating at travel plazas and wanted to try something local. We got off I-80, just over the Ohio border in Indiana and discovered Clay's Family Restaurant on one of our first trips. Once we found Clay's we tried to stop there on the way to and way from Chicago....the only time we didn't stop was if we were traveling at night when the restaurant was closed. We loved the blue gill fish, pies, and pretty much everything else we tried. It is well prepared, homemade tasty, and served by cheerful helpful staff. It has...

Quaint. Like a step back in time. The menu and hours have changed from what they have on their website. It needs to be updated. We walked in there on a Saturday, about 11:30AM, and they still had the breakfast buffet going. I asked the waitress, and she said they have it until about Noon. The menu items and prices have changed also. We had the all you can eat fish and shrimp. But never did get any more then the two pieces of the heavily battered fish, which was tasty. Husband had the Blue Gill and he loved it, said he could of eaten twice as much. The raspberry pie was very small and way too sweet for our liking. And the dough was under cooked. The salad bar they have serves iceberg lettuce,...

After doing some hiking in the area, went to Clay's for a late lunch. Was seated, and then asked for our drinks, after being provided with menus. We selected NY strip [medium] salad bar, and the famous grilled bluegill sweet potato fries... both came w/ side of green beans. The steak and bluegill were both excellent, very good taste, with the steak juicy tender, and the bluegill lightly battered fried. Also had a side of fresh fruit. And then topped it all off with a rhappleberry pie to go,,, tasty, very durn tasty. Service was likewise excellent helpful and friendly. Building and insides are clean. Good place!

Friendly people serving great food. Open Tuesday Sunday. Within 5 minutes of the toll road, and well worth the stop. They make their own pies, soups, and many other offerings. The pies are amazing, both in variety and quality. The soups are all fresh made, hearty and flavorful. Their own recipe sloppy Joe sandwich comes on a perfectly toasted bun get it on the daily special with fries and a cup of one of the four soups that day. The onion rings are fresh and rival any you 've ever had. You 'll feel like a 'regular ' on your first visit. All that at reasonable prices. Reserva una mesa ahora

I was particularly eager to try the turkey and dressing, which the menu promised was carved from a real turkey. In today's world, we often encounter turkey that is pressed and shaped, so enjoying a plate of genuine, quality turkey was a delightful surprise. The selection of homemade cakes was also impressive, and when I finally rolled out the door, I was in a state of pure food bliss. Thank you, Clay's, for maintaining such wonderful standards all these years. I have no doubt my grandfather would have smiled in approval.

WOW! The amazing food threw me away! Everything from soup salad bar, to our dinner (fried bluegill roasted mussels), to homemade rhabarb pee was delicious! The building itself is a little dated could rebuild (especially the bathrooms), but the food makes you look at the decor. Top Notch is worth many future visits!

It's located halfway between our house and our children's place, so we really enjoy stopping for lunch on our way there and dinner on our way back. We often travel from Chicago to Cleveland.
