This place gets five stars as it is a dream, fantasy place for how good a small, local restaurant should be in terms of the balance of customer service, ambience, food quality and value. The chef-patron has had the place for years and it shows in terms of his professionalism and devotion to his craft. I had an amazing three course set lunch here for €14.50 which is incredible. And the set lunch actually had decent dishes on it that are worth having, rather than having to resort to the à la carte menu which is a common gag in many restaurants in France. On our first night in Chinon, we wandered through the 2-3 streets where the main restaurants are, then turned into a tiny side street to discover this little gem tucked away at the end of the alleyway. Seated outside, rock walls and masses of greenery - the setting was sublime. We had a charcuterie shared plate, followed by coq au vin - with 'real chooks' and succulent vegs. Excellent bottle of Loire red was topped off with a traditional creme brûlée. The service was first rate - an engaging waiter - and the meal was the best we'd had since arriving in Paris 2 weeks previously. A memorable evening!
we returned by following reviews of the site and we were not disappointed. The formula 3 dishes at 14.5 euros or 2 dishes at 11 euros is satisfactory. the reception is good (we arrived at 5 to 45 minutes from the end of the service)! We were not looking for a gastronomic formula (not the means), but then what was served us was simple (veau marengo ) but very correct. a good lunch in a setting too classic but pleasant hair because small restaurant in a beautiful street.
I ate at Restaurant Cote Jardin on my first night in Chinon. They have a prix-fixe three-course menu for about 15 euros. (I chose it because of its recommendation in Rick Steves France 2017). I had the vegetable soup (so-so), pave de boeuf in roquefort sauce with penne pasta on the side (good), and fresh fruit salad for dessert (good). It was very filling, and the ambiance was peaceful. The bread was good, too.

We had a great evening in this restaurant. the reception is impeccable, the menus at all prices (14€50 for the menu of the day entrance-plat-dessert midi and evening.) we ate outside, in a very pleasant garden terrace, nicely decorated and quiet. service is courteous and at a reasonable pace. Nothing misses to have a good simple and hearty meal. We highly recommend.
luckily we found a restaurant that from outside did not offer us to enter, but at the corner of the street we had access to the terrace where by chance there was only one free table for four people. his wife. desserts are very delicious. Average quality/price for such refined dishes
well for those who wish to eat for cheap (15 euros entry/plat/dessert midi and evening). Simple but correct kitchen. drinks are quite expensive (soda, wine, ...).
