The reason the headline here says surprising is because we were fully expecting mediocre food and service on Mont-Saint-Michel; the result of having read decidedly mixed reviews here on TA and elsewhere. Going in, we had steeled ourselves to the likely fact we were walking into a Tourist Trap, but we were ready to do so anyway because MSM seems so special. And it was. In the wintertime, Croix Blanche shares a dining room with Auberge St. Pierre right next door. The restaurant was warm and homey, and our welcome was likewise. We had purchased a bed-and-board package, and so our menu options were a bit limited, but we did not notice: the sea bass and the lamb chips were properly cooked and the portions were sizable. Our servers were polite and friendly. We had a very good time, no doubt in part because our expectations were greatly exceeded!
When we entered a first waiter asked us what we wanted (many things to do in a restaurant , he asked us to wait. After 10 minutes standing and waiting a second one came and asked us the same question (it is only a restaurant . When we said we wanted to eat (incredible in a restaurant isn't it? . He became upset and agressive, saying that he had others things to do like taking orders. While we we were waiting we saw customers very upset standing up and going to the kitchen to get their bottles of water or their cutlery. We left before trying the food. Don’t go there!!!
There's little to choose from in terms of menu and price between the handful of restaurants in this strip. We were met by the rudest of French men who directed us pointedly to a table in front of the door where I knew I'd be chilly. We asked if we could take another table and he turned his back. So did we. Go somewhere else. We did and the atmosphere was cheery and service was excellent and polite.
