Spieker is the most authentic Ammerländer restaurant housed within an old multi story farm house directly by the lake in the pretty town of Bad Zwischenahn. From the moment you step through the medieval entrance door you realise you are about to be transformed back...into another time. We sat upstairs and sampled the famous smoked eel served whole. Each eel has a tag showing where it was smoked and the price which is based on weight. You simply retain the tag for your bill and remove the head and skin (there is the correct way your waiter will show you, in my case my local friends did) and start enjoying the rich smokey flavour. I left 2 decades ago Germany and am now on a reminder tour about my own history and education; many joys to go and meet people. I have seen bad bad between on the map and decided to give him one away to remember. good old times here. with the smoked pavement (aal) 20 years back to be so drunk on the schnapps that I was almost crooked after home; I had to come back here. it was just as great as 20 years ago. not enough crew, because this seems to be a big problem, although so many new people come to Europe, but it is obviously very difficult to find dinge for restaurants. a dame and the chef, where the terrace runs and they could still serve and even entertain. a memory for a lifetime! many t...

Smoked eels is a bit of an acquired taste, but if it’s something you would like to try out, this is one of the more authentic experience you can have. Be prepared to skin the smoked eel yourself but it’s easy and you will be...shown how to do it. The eels are very tasty but it will take you some to time to get the smoky smell off your fingers even after they are thoroughly washed with schnapps as per the tradition. You also get to drink the schnapps to help the eel go down. Dinner comes about to EUR 60 depending on how many eels you manage to eat.

Had a dinner with friends last week what a delicious surprise with a nice ambiance and authentic atmosphere, great food. We live on Chesapeake Bay so we know our sea food. We did not dare to try the eel (we are chickens when it...comes to strange food), however all herring and matjes dishes were out of this world. As my wife says matjes heaven. It's a very rustic and historic restaurant, the building is part of the open-air museum in Bad Zwischenhan. The focus is clearly on smoked eel (from fish farms not traditional fishing) with roasted potatoes which is really delicious. If you want you can get before...and during and after the meal the traditional spoon drink (Löffeltrunk) enjoy the surprise. Staff is super friendly.

Ate here in a charming little room. Even though the server could speak little English, she managed to have us order a fried white fish. Not sure what it was, but the taste was excellent. One of the best meals I had in Germany. Great...little salad with the meal. Three of us had the same dish and we all rated it top notch. Would love to eat there again!

if they are in bad between, they must go to this restaurant and taste the smoked aal. we never had such a delicous aal for a long time. remember that the aal is very heavy food, so do not forget to order the schnapps.' after the meal. this restaurant is located in a traditional farmhouse, very pictoresque. service is very friendly.
