Dona Calma Gastrobar Sanlucar De Barrameda

Our first trip back to Spain for months and our first meal out in Spain. We love the consistency of this restaurant, the fact you can come here after months and still find the same amazing dishes done to the same high standards. We gorged ourselves on all our favourite dishes, tuna tacos, tuna tartare, prawn croquettes and also tried a new dish, prawn taco, which was a big juicy prawn in chipotle sauce inside a taco with other ingredients, very tasty but I wasn’t keen on the grated cheese on top. Once again the food was excellent and the service is efficient but really lacks friendliness or warmth. We have been coming to this restaurant for several years and have seen the same staff repeatedly when we visit, but we are still directed to the worst table for 2 in the restaurant and have to ask to be seated at a better table with a view and there are never any pleasantries involved, no “hello, how are you?” Or when we left our waitress could clearly see us leaving but couldn’t be bothered to even say goodbye to us. It’s a real shame that the staff here don’t recognise that making customers feel welcome and that you value their custom is a big part of the experience of eating out.

Fantastic new glass enclosure means that the area outside the restaurant that was previously outside tables, is now enclosed with glass that in summer can be opened. This allowed us to eat outside in November with a fantastic 180 degree view of the bay, and watch balletic wind-surfers riding the waves and fishing boats racing back to get their fish into auction. It is also a much more defined non-smoking area whereas before you would still get the odd person who thought being outside meant you could smoke. We had all our favourite dishes and one of the specials which was fried eggs and crispy fried potatoes with summer black truffle, cep mushrooms and Italian pancetta. They should make more of point of saying the mushrooms are ceps as these are a real seasonal treat to have, they should also mention that there is pancetta is in the dish in case of non-meat eaters like myself. Luckily it was on top so easy to remove and give to partner! This continues to be our favourite restaurant in Sanlucar, it really does have it all; terrific food packed with flavour, amazing value, beautiful views and attentive staff, what more could you want?

Tuna tartare is one of our favourite dishes, we had already been disappointed in 2 other restaurants with this dish, so thought we would try it again here. Third time lucky, this is by far the best one we have had on this trip, the tuna is the star of the dish, superb quality with umami flavours, no mayonnaise, mustard or ropey tuna here. We also had their signature tuna taco dish, again brimming with the highest quality tuna and bursting with flavour. A small portion of the very rich, smokey potato, algae and salmon dish ‘ensaladilla de algas y ahumados’. A bowl of earthy beetroot salmorejo, although I do prefer the traditional tomato based salmorejo and last but definitely not least little crispy balls with soft prawn inside, prawn croquettes. All washed down with an affordable bottle of white wine. We always make a beeline for this restaurant when in the neighbourhood.

Really fantastic. Small place in Sanlúcar with well elaborated food. Modern taste in the region. Well design plates with traditional ingredients.

Lovely restaurant, great food and excellent service. Recommended to us by our hotel. Would love to go back! Beautifully located on the sea front.
