It seems that the hospitality industry has taken a hit during the pandemic. During a recent trip from the ACT to Melbourne to catch the Spirit of Tasmania, we experienced some disappointing service at Ebden and Olive. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to dine at any restaurants on the boat and had to bring our own food. When we arrived at Ebden and Olive around noon, we ordered lunch. However, when I tried to order sandwiches to take on the boat, I was informed by Fasil Bawlty that the kitchen was closed at 12:34. When we arrived, the staff didn't even acknowledge us but they were clearly stressed out and flustered. It wasn't really busy so I'm not sure why. I ordered a latte but I got a cappuccino which I couldn't drink because the milk tasted burnt. It was also really hot but they didn't have the AC switched on. I was disappointed that there were not a lot of options on the breakfast menu for vegetarians but I went with the crumpets which turned out to be delicious.
We accidentally took the wrong exit off the freeway and ended up driving through an industrial area. The restaurant we found was located next to a Swedish bakery. The Asian food was absolutely incredible, and we couldn't help but notice the beautiful sandwiches being served to other customers at a nearby table. The customer service was top-notch.
On a drive from Sydney to Melbourne and needed lunch- we wanted to avoid fast food, and I’m so happy we took a short detour and stopped at E&O. Delicious take away sandwiches and excellent coffee- lovely community vibe and clearly local flavor. One of the best ham and cheese toasties I’ve ever had!
