El Canillero is well worth a visit if you wish to savour local dishes prepared on the premises by a brilliant chef. Xavi, the chef and owner, delivers a wonderful range of Tapas, value for money Menu del Dia and a la carte. Recently featured on a Spanish TV food channel Xavi always conjours up something different and delicious. With his English speaking wife Silvia taking front of house he provides a different level of food to that you would normally expect from a medium sized bar/restaurant. Some of the delicacies we have enjoyed are 'wild boar in red sauce ', 'Lamb shanks in honey sauce ' and traditional Paella. The Tapas is varied but on market days (Velez Malaga 's Thursday market is across the road) he provides such delights as 'Morcilla and cebolla ' (black pudding and onion) which is to die for, also soft cheese with anchovies and smoked salmon with red peppers all of which are on a bread base. This is in addition to the traditional 'Russian salad ', Boquerones etc. All tapas is priced at only 70c, you won 't beat that value anywhere. Xavi and Silvia are a wonderful couple who ensure that every customer enjoys the experience of El Canillero, an experience that should not be missed.
