El domingo es día de mercado en Villaricos. Para las diez de la mañana, el lugar está lleno de gente que viene a comprar frutas y verduras o simplemente buscando algo especial a un precio de ganga. En algún momento necesitan recargar energías y muchos van a El Gato. ¿Por qué? Porque es el mejor, tanto en comida como en ambiente. No tiene sentido pedir un menú. Abrirse paso entre la multitud alrededor de la barra mientras uno de ustedes "reserva" una mesa (la táctica es estar en alerta y saltar en cuanto se libere una). Went to El Gato 2 nights ago as staying with pals nearby. Villaricos was pretty much shut for the evening (a Sun night at 9pm) which is unusual in Spain but El Gato was open, so we gave it a go. Enjoyed some magro con tomate, and tortillitas de camarones. The house beer was good (according to those who drank it) and even if the service was a bit haphazard, it was a fun atmosphere. We were a group of Spaniards but the waiter Jesus spoke some English and seemed ot be looking after his English clients well.
This is a proper Spanish bar that serves great tapas/food (try the Magra con tomate and the calamari) at a very reasonable price, probably the cheapest drinks in the village, you can have a great night out with food and drinks at less than half the cost of going to a restaurant. The staff are friendly even the owner who appears grumpy, but no English is spoken so you will have to make yourself understood.
Este bar ofrece tanto cerveza fría como tapas extraordinarias. Sus gambas rebozadas son excelentes al igual que su magra (cerdo en salsa de tomate). Merece la pena visitarlo. Muy concurrido los domingos por la mañana, ya que es un favorito español durante el mercado.

Nothing nicer than to sit in the morning sunshine with a cup of coffee watching the crowds go by at the market. Owner is very friendly and at 1 euro for a great cup of coffee, excellent value. El Gato is always on our stopping list for our Sunday market visit.
Bar tradicional español que sirve tapas y platos más grandes, agradable y animado en la plaza, siempre con un buen ambiente y personal amable. ¡Extremadamente buena relación calidad-precio también!
