Restaurante El Vasco lies close to the Centre of Vila-Real, a small town to the south of Catellon de la Plana and 40 minutes drive north of Valencia, about 5km inland from the coast and about half way up the east side of Spain ! You would never find it or know about it unless you were a local, it is in a very unassuming building on a side street, just out from the centre of town. A very modest sign above the entrance announces its presence, in a residential building that almost hides it from view. You cannot just walk in, but have to press a buzzer to be let in and you then walk past football memorabilia intermixed with more conventional Restaurant fixtures and fittings. The restaurant is quite small with a generous kitchen that you can see into as you go past. It feels very local and understated. However, the food was simply stunning and of an exceptionally high quality, with a wide range of simple yet creative local dishes brought to our table (this was a business lunch). They use the finest ingredient to creat a series of sublime courses that complimented each other beautifully. The Jamon de Jabugo was delicious with and ice cold beer to go with the tomato bread, the Benito Ihintza so delicate that it melted in your mouth, the 80 day hung beef, cooked by your own fair hand at your table on a sizzling and very hot earthenware platter was sublime.... the dishes kept coming until we ran out of time and had to surrender, and ask for a Cortado coffee to finish (the best coffee that I have had in a long time). It was such a surprise, unpretentious and the staff were extremely helpful and made the lunch feel far more personal and special. They all spoke English which helped. This is well worth hunting for, even if a little difficult to find with not much else around it.... but I would highly recommend it and suggest considering the trip even if you are staying in Valencia.... It would be great for a business lunch (this region is the centre of porcelain manufacturing in Spain), great for family and friends.... not very romantic given the wider setting, but worth a try just for the delicious food.

We had lunch here when we visited Vila Real to watch a match at El Madrigal stadium. We were immediately impressed by the ambience of the restaurant, helped along by seeing a framed signed Contador shirt in the hallway (Spain 's most famous pro cyclist, for those who don 't follow the sport). There was no menu offered, which initially threw us into a spin, as we are not meat eaters and speak little or no Spanish. Although the first plate proffered was very meaty, this wasn 't a problem, as we were able to make ourselves understood and a non meaty alternative was offered. Our main courses were 2 types of fish, and this was absolutely delicious. We hadn 't intended to have starters and desserts, but found ourselves saying 'yes please, and muy bien ' as the food was too good to resist. For what we had three courses with drinks it was reasonably priced, although not cheap. But we were very happy, and will return if we find ourselves again in Vila Real.

Impromptu stop due to visiting the gardens next to the restaurant. Don’t let the exterior put you off! Good food and friendly service, VIÑA POMAL house wine! Interior nicely done, burgers huge and freshly made, please note this is not a burger and chips restaurant! The menu choice is varied and well prepared in a traditional way. Seems a popular destination with the locals, plenty of parking at the back! I would visit again and have one of the traditional dishes.
