Restaurante El Vasco lies close to the Centre of Vila-Real, a small town to the south of Catellon de la Plana and 40 minutes drive north of Valencia, about 5km inland from the coast and about half way up the east side of Spain ! You would never find it or know about it unless you were a local, it is in a very unassuming building on a side street, just out from the centre of town. A very modest sign above the entrance announces its presence, in a residential building that almost hides it from view. You cannot just walk in, but have to press a buzzer to be let in and you then walk past football memorabilia intermixed with more conventional Restaurant fixtures and fittings. The restaurant is quite small with a generous kitchen that you can see into as you go past. It feels very local and understated. However, the food was simply stunning and of an exceptionally high quality, with a wide range of simple yet creative local dishes brought to our table (this was a business lunch). They use the finest ingredient to creat a series of sublime courses that complimented each other beautifully. The Jamon de Jabugo was delicious with and ice cold beer to go with the tomato bread, the Benito Ihintza so delicate that it melted in your mouth, the 80 day hung beef, cooked by your own fair hand at your table on a sizzling and very hot earthenware platter was sublime.... the dishes kept coming until we ran out of time and had to surrender, and ask for a Cortado coffee to finish (the best coffee that I have had in a long time). It was such a surprise, unpretentious and the staff were extremely helpful and made the lunch feel far more personal and special. They all spoke English which helped. This is well worth hunting for, even if a little difficult to find with not much else around it.... but I would highly recommend it and suggest considering the trip even if you are staying in Valencia.... It would be great for a business lunch (this region is the centre of porcelain manufacturing in Spain), great for family and friends.... not very romantic given the wider setting, but worth a try just for the delicious food.
