Five years after the shocking news that Epi's Basque Restaurant owners Chris Ansotegui and Gina Ansotegui Urquidi planned to retire and that the outstanding Meridian restaurant might close, I'm happy to report that seemingly little has changed from the restaurant named after the women's grandmother, who ran a Basque boarding house in Hailey. Sure, Chris is no longer there to cheerfully greet guests and give them a hug coming and going. Likewise, sister Gina and longtime server Bridget Murphy have also retired. Had the chance to go to Epi's recently for the first time. The food was excellent and the service was on point. The menu had many great choices. The calamari was cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes had the perfect texture. The waiter was quite friendly and attentive. The atmosphere inside was crowded and quite loud. The prices for the main courses seemed high for some of the portions.

The meal did not meet my expectations. The salad was quite basic, consisting of just chopped lettuce, a few pieces of carrot, and a single tomato. For the main course, I had the roast leg of lamb served with shrimp rice, which was a strange combination that didn't complement each other well. Despite the high praise for Epi, we ended up feeling let down by our dining experience.

The do serve you a lot of food! I was a bit disappointed in the filet, it was cooked to M and yet it was still dry. I did let the waitress know after the first couple bites, she apologized and went about her day. My youngest did enjoy his chicken tenders and smiley fries and my oldest loved the mash potatoes and ribeye. Reserva una mesa ahora

Never had basque food before, and this was an awesome first experience. A little expensive to go consistently but if you’re looking for a “treat yo self night” this is a pretty good option.

Absolutely phenomenal food in a vibrant atmosphere—definitely 10 stars! I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was too busy having a great time. Plus, they offer Mac and Jack's on tap!
