Gasthaus Zur GrÜnen Au

Coming from South Africa where the smoking laws are generally very respected and smokers are considerate and mindful, I am always amazed at how thick skinned some Austrians are! In this Gasthof, you have to access the non-smoking dining room by walking through the smokers section first, which is absolutely preposterous! When I had a moan about this, I was informed coldly, that I could have accessed it by walking around the entire building and entering through the back.Gosh, why didn't I think of that? The food portions are massive, everybody took home their leftovers in tinfoil, service was extremely brisk, with the waitress barking orders and hurrying us along, as the chef didn't work beyon...

We went there on a family trip and we were not disappointed. The schnitzels were probably the most tender I ever ate. The salad and french fries were also really good. The portions are way too big by our standards but they spontaneously offered to pack the remains. We ate outside were the smokers are welcome so this part was a bit less pleasant. We also disregarded that in a such remote location, we shouldn't have expected to be able to pay by card. Only cash is accepted. All in all, this was a really pleasant experience.

Lovely little regional restaurant. Great authentic Austrian food. Generous servings and well priced. Service was fine.
