I was warned before coming here that Gretchen is like a mini Berghain but with not as good sound. That description turned out to be relatively accurate. From the outside, the building is far from impressive; I expected something a little more well manicured. Inside it looks fine, but it 's a bit cavernous. The sound isn 't terrible, but for a venue dedicated to live music (most of it electronic), I would assume it would be a little better. There are columns on the stage which can be elegant or tacky, depending on your take. The walls are covered in projections, which is actually kind of cool. There 's plenty of seating and room to dance, which is nice. The bar is large but doesn 't impose up...
some hard facts: bad sound system, everything drowned in bass. that was the most disappointing about it. like a cheap club. with prices up at the higher level (3 euros for a small beer, entry 12 euros . faceless, boring ambience (except for those pillars.. . staff seemed okay. crowd is mainly like 18-25, of course it depends on what you like my impression was that there were not really the laid-back people you can meet in good clubs in berlin, it was more like a hipster crowd with their facade they build up every evening. and some tourists of the lonely-planet-junkie type. all in all it was not my cup of tea. Don't wear clothes. There is no air conditioning and you might die. It was the first week of August and it was TERRIBLY hot. Miserably hot. I wish I didn't have pants on. A bit of a line on a Saturday night, but expected. Sound was alright. Beers are reasonably priced. Shots are SUPER cheap.. But door entrance fees are quite hefty. I'd only come back if the DJ was awesome, as it was this fateful night I attended. Overall, a decent time.
