Good portions at affordable prices (cheap even), ordered a chicken katsu curry and a tempura udon, at the time of review it was $13.50 and $11 respectively, great value. The chicken katsu curry was more like 70% curry and 30% rice, the taste was good but nothing amazing. The tempura udon was served with 2 fried prawn tempura with a bowl of udon, the tempura itself was fried well, little meat and a lot of batter, and the udon was cooked perfectly how I like it, soup was fine. For the price, this place is a great spot to indulge in some Japanese food that won't break the bank, don't expect it to knock your socks off with the flavour or quality though.
On my final discoveries of all places Japanese on Smith Street, I headed into Hanabi Sushi to check out their offerings. They’re open 11am to 7pm and I popped in twice for lunch to check out their hot offerings and their hand rolls. There’s usually a bit of a queue but the service is fast, as is any ordered meals. Quite cheap, the teriyaki chicken don is $8.40 and the sushi rolls are around the $2.50 mark. The teriyaki sauce on the chicken is a good seasoning and there’s a lot. Most of the chicken was nice but a occasional chewy bit wasn’t quite as good. I rated the hand rolls, good ratio of meat to rice.
Sushi good but.... Been here a few times recently generally just got sushi and have always enjoyed what is on offer, fresh and esp. the fried prawn or chicken are very good. Just today I tried the Gyudon (fried beef on rice). Last week it was fine but this week way too salty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, won't have that again! Will just stick to the sushi which at $2.50 for just about everything there is pretty good value. Friendly staff too.
The vegetarian bento box at this restaurant is excellent, with rice, gyoza, croquette, edamame, and seaweed salad. The sushi is consistently delicious, especially their special rice (either white or brown). Really the best/fresh sushi in Melbourne. Have been coming here every Tuesday for 1.5 years and am never disappointed with the sushi. I highly recommend the fried prawn handroll. I also recommend the salmon and avocado handroll. Always very generous with the wasabi and ginger. <br/ <br/ :D :D
