**The Food:** The food was good, but not extraordinary. The Tempura Shrimp appetizer was decent but didn't stand out, much like the Fried Calamari. I’ve had similar fried seafood at restaurants in Boston’s North End, along the New Hampshire shore, and on Cape Cod—good, but nothing remarkable. However, the entrees were more impressive. I had the New Hampshire sea scallops, which were large, juicy, and perfectly seared with pancetta, served alongside a delicious tomato-zucchini risotto, market vegetables, and basil-garlic oil. At $26, it felt slightly overpriced, but I truly enjoyed it and deemed it worth the cost. My husband went for the Surf and Turf, which included a butter-poached lobster...
Our reservations were for 7:15, but it took 25 minutes for anyone at the bar to come over to me. After that, we waited an additional 45 minutes to be seated in a nearly empty restaurant because the hostess forgot about us. As a vegetarian, I was mainly there to enjoy the evening with my boyfriend. Before making the reservation, I specifically asked if they had vegetarian options, and the attendant assured me they did and that I just needed to let my server know so the kitchen could prepare something special for me. However, when I inquired about vegetarian options, our server simply replied, "vegetables." I pressed for more details, and he mentioned they only had a sautéed mix of vegetables...
Our server, Sydney, took quite a while to attend to us. We waited 20 minutes just for water, and another 20 for bread. During this time, I noticed Sydney was prioritizing the older, more affluent guests, giving them much better service. There was a couple at a nearby table who had been seated before us, yet they didn't receive their food until around the same time we did. We finally sat down at 6:40 PM, and when Sydney took our order, we decided to order both our appetizers and main dishes to avoid any further delays, as it was already nearing 7:30 PM. The menu and wine options are varied and feature high-quality selections. Prices are quite reasonable, and in fact, they are somewhat lower than those at similar restaurants. The service was outstanding; our waiter was attentive yet not overly intrusive. The establishment is impressively clean, including the restrooms. While we waited for our table, we sat at the bar and enjoyed excellent drinks and service. Notably, this is the only restaurant we've been to in a long time that offers a coat room, which is much better than piling coats on the chairs! This was our first visit, and we had been thinking about it for years. Thankfully, we got a table right away in the early evening. Catherine provided outstanding service from the moment we arrived to the very end. The specials were enticing and quite unique. We decided on the meatballs wrapped in bacon, a Caesar salad, a 12 oz filet, and the surf and turf. The drinks were both flavorful and strong. Each dish was bursting with flavor, truly high-end dining. We would definitely return, especially since it’s not your average restaurant. There’s a good reason for that!
One of our favorite places. Since our boys young men now can appreciate a good steak, we have been trying out different steak houses when we travel or have a special occasion. Even after making the trek down to Boston a few times. Our go to will definitely be Hanover Street Chophouse. Alway a great meal-consistently, with a great choice of steaks. Love the ambiance- classic, and good service. Can 't beat the proximity if you live in NH, and to top that off, it is the by far the best value. Feel fortunate to have it in our backyard.
