After wandering the narrow streets of Aix en Provence one night, I settled on Hue Cocotte and was very happy with my choice! Before seating me at an outside table, my waitress assured me that they had an English menu. She brought the daily French menu (written in chalk on a small board and then proceeded to explain in English the various dishes (getting help from a nearby table of customers for tricky words like lamb . So of course, I tried the lamb. The meat came on the bone, with vegetables and juices all served in a hot cocotte container. Along with bread and wine, the meal was perfect...
Sometimes in the Old Ville of Aix you take a wrong turn... and sometimes you take a right turn that leads you to the best meal of your vacation. Hue Cocotte has a warm and friendly staff. Their menu is comprised of an original concept meal slow cooking in small single pot that I wish we had back home in Los Angeles. It was so delicious we ate here twice during our vacation. First night I had the lamb shank, and the second night I had the vegetable stew with poached egg. Both dishes were spot on, bursting with flavor. Simply divine.
Incredible food days later and I am still dreaming of the ravioli with mint! Everything we had was delicious, from the lamb falling off the bone to the light and flavorful ravioli. The owner was very helpful in translating the menu for us, and was friendly and surprisingly quick in serving us. We arrived just as they were opening and got an in person reservation for 10 minutes from then. Thank goodness, because the place was packed for the rest of the evening!
This was a lovely restaurant for some home style food. We had a delicious egg and blue cheese appetizer followed by rabbit and shrimp main dishes. The food comes hot in a cococett (steel pot) and the flavors were great. As a visitor from America, it was a great dinner with some great tastes of France. The servers were happy to explain everything in English. It was very charming.
