We snowshoe’d up to the mountain house, and the last half of the hike was in fog, blowing snow, and whiteout conditions. We were certainly glad to arrive at the warm hut, with its big 200 year old wood stove and its very traditional Appenzell interior. This house is up at the top of a local hill (1300m+ hill! , so do not expect gourmet cuisine or décor. This is a mountain hut “beiz” – a place for hikers to get food, some warm drinks, some snacks, or a quick shot of schnapps before hitting the trail again. The menu is traditional, local kitchen food (pasta, cheese, wurst, bread,… … think of it as fuel for the journey. The hospitality was fine, and the staff seemed pleased to have visitors on...
