This establishment is an Alsace multi award winning restaurant. This restaurant is a secret place. Those that know. Know. Restaurant Jean Victor Kalt. Dishes A la carte. Dishes set priced. Off the beaten track, just a couple of miles outside of Strasbourg and its discovery is like an oasis in a quiet discrete location. Do not let the location put you off going there. Quite the opposite. Jump into a taxi from Strasbourg train station and you are at Restaurant Jean Victor Kalt in 30 minutes. The journey is pleasant. The Chef, Mr. Kalt, never surprises on quality. Every dish is top quality. He oversees all the dishes before they are sent to tables. Periodically, he ventures out of the kitchen to ensure that his restaurant clients are satisfied with the dishes. Nothing is too much for this masterful Chef from the Alsace. Ladies this is the perfect man. On the weekend of Saturday 26 August 2017 a small International group dined at restaurant Jean Victor Kalt. Over the table we spoke German, English and French. Chef Kalt was more than able to converse with us and exact from each of us our preferences for dishes. On this occasion there was a non-meat eater in the group. Chef Kalt created two dishes specifically for that guest and created a new menu combination based upon the Menu de la Mer at €50 Euros. The other guests had selected the Menu at €62 Euros each. The most expensive menu on the carte. If you ask me, that price would have been easily doubled in a London or Parisian restaurant. The €62 Euros menu included: Le foie gras de canard maison cuit en terrine Les noix de St-Jacques façon “Jean-Victor” La belle assiette du pêcheur La pièce du boucher selon l’humeur du chef Le chariot de fromages affinés Le grand dessert Jean-Victor Kalt Along with the selected menus we were all delighted with the additional hot savoury pastry starter, fresh baked bread by Chef Kalt’s own hands and local REAL butter. The fresh bread came to the table several times with the lashings of real butter. The Amuse-bouches were tantalisingly pleasing. We had a game with Chef Kalt to see if we ascertain which ingredients were used. We did not win. So much for our discernible palates. As for the wines? From start to finish they were recommended by Chef Kalt for their part to play in supporting the dishes. Perfect choices from the stable of Cremant, Riesling and Burgundy residing within Chef Kalt’s incredible cellar. To finish there was a choice from a selection of connoisseur teas and coffee, as well as homemade, delicate and scrumptious chocolates and small sweet; but not overly sweet, pastries. The child within was most contented as the waist band expanded double time. Those that could, had a generous glass of Alsace Grappa. We were spoiled rotten by Chef Kalt and the incredible silver service. Silver Service par excellence. Par exemplar. Or, in simple English ‘above par’. I must confess that this was my FOURTH visit. At each occasion the Chef Kalt NEVER dropped standards. Nor his team of waiting staff. That would be “sacre-bleu!” Being an Assessor and Hospitality Inspector I would have picked that up and pointed that out in this review. Restaurant Jean Victor Kalt is definitely a discrete, hospitable, warm, clean and trusted home from home, if your home also had silver service on tap. It is most welcoming to its guests, whom whenever I have been there have been well mannered couples and groups of people from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. The guests that I dined with over the weekend were testament to that. Including the guests from the previous three visits. Whether you are lesbian, homosexual, transgender or straight you are welcomed. Whether you are British Black, of mixed heritage from India, North/South Africa, China or South America you are welcomed in the ‘home’ of Chef Kalt. For those that are High Net Worth Individuals or individuals having personal security detail, this is an ideal place. Far from the madding crowd.
