Kaleos is okay. It has its pros and cons. Service has always been good. Food is good. I love the lilikoi cheesecake but the chocolate crust sucks. I don't eat that part. Lilikoi and chocolate is not a good combination in my opinion. The part about Kaleos Orchidland that I don't like is the building and how loud the music is when they have live music. The restaurant is basically a large garage. Its got metal walls, metal roof, concrete floor. Nothing to absorb sound so even when there is no music its difficult to hear across the table. Now to the volume of the live music. I don't mind the music, they are pretty good and play some good songs, but its the volume they play and are allowed to play that is WAYYY too loud. Its ridiculous how loud they are allowed to play the music. Who on earth is the manager that thinks it's okay for the band to play that loud at a restaurant?! Last time we were there our table was literally as far away as possible from the speakers and we could not hear each other talking at the table. The poor waitress had to yell out the specials and we could barely hear her. This was on a Thursday night. Okay to good food, but the music is way to loud. The people at the bar really enjoyed the band, but goodness that's way to loud for live music at a dine-in restaurant.
This might be the best meal we had the 5 days we were on the big island. Their fish was exactly what we were wanting the whole trip. I had the Mahi sautéed in tomato, garlic, white wine and lemon and my partner had the blackened with the pineapple salsa. The salad and rice they serve with it was really good as well. Also we had coconut shrimp to and a cocktail each that did not disappoint. The staff was nice and didn't overdue anything. The Hilo side of the island wasn't that great but this place stands out for sure. A must go!
