Wow! I've been coming to this restaurant on and off for over 17 years, but I've noticed a HUGE decline! The sushi chef was rude and distant, and the waiter was hardly around. It felt more like a takeout place than a restaurant. What's going on? It was a Saturday night, and there was hardly anyone there. The phone kept ringing off the hook. The atmosphere was unfriendly, and I won’t be returning. When I asked if the owner was present, they mentioned they were getting a NEW OWNER!!! Yikes! There were no physical menus—only QR codes, and the place had an odd smell of Lysol mixed with dirty socks. To top it off, there was cage fighting on the TV right in front of the sushi bar. This is a restaurant you will either love or dislike, primarily due to the rolls, rather than the sushi. The sushi selection is quite limited and falls short of exceptional; I tried the yellowtail, and I wouldn't order it again. However, the rolls are the standout feature here. Most of them are variations on either a spicy tuna roll or a California roll. I'm not a fan of the California roll, but spicy tuna is more my style. I sampled the Fire roll, which was just okay, but later, the Tataki roll really impressed me. My friends, however, adore the rolls, which is why we make the 20-minute drive to dine here. My family has been a huge fan of Kanpai since it first opened. However, I've noticed that something has definitely changed in the past year or so. During our last two visits, the food was severely lacking. The sushi rice was completely flavorless, as if they forgot to season it. We even found several pieces of plastic wrap in the sushi. The wasabi looked artificial—I’ve never seen a color like that anywhere else. Each of the five of us ordered something different, and none of us were satisfied with our meals. Just had the chicken teriyaki dinner with tempura. Soooo good. The miso soup. The salad. The everything was so good and a good amount for a great price. I can't believe this was my first time coming in. The black doors and windows always turned me away because it appeared to be closed or uninviting, but I'm so glad my friend took me here tonight. After trying all the local sushi spots, this is our go-to sushi! We have yet to be disappointed. Everything is so good and the staff is always happy. Definitely get the firecracker appetizer, tempura Phili role, and the lobster special when they have it. Can't recommend enough! Wish they were open on Mondays.
