Well this place continues to impress me. Stopped in today for some sandwiches and meats and was very pleasantly surprised. It's a small storefront that shares a parking lot with a Weinerschnitzel...seems a little ironic, because despite the Germanic heritage the two couldn't be more different. Inside you'll find a few tables for dine in, and a few short aisles full of pickles, sauces, mustards, beers, chocolates, snacks and other things from Germany. They've got a ton of different deli meats and sausages. Once again we got some liverwurst (this is what turned me on to this place), also some weisswurst and smoked bratwurst. At our deli clerk's recommendation, got one cold sandwich (po boy) and one hot (Reuben). Po boy: total craveworthy sandwich in its beautiful simplicity. Really good light German rye, mustard, finely shredded iceberg lettuce, and a nice stack of meats. This sandwich hit the spot like no other in recent memory. A sizeable sandwich (about $12), I had to share it and all I wanted to do was devour it all myself! 6/5! Reuben: buttery, moist. Didn't get quite enough tang from the kraut but still enjoyable and totally respectable. 4/5. The sausages looked great and I wanted to buy everything in the deli case so I'm going to give them 5/5 even though I haven't tasted them. Bear claw: eggy, yellow, fresh baked. I found it a tiny bit dry and it took a while to get to the almond paste filling, which was very generous once it was reached. 3.5/5 Apple strudel: they have cherry and apple and another clerk recommended the apple, so apple it was. It didn't disappoint: ton of filling which tasted homemade and not overly goopy, thin sweet layers of pastry. Totally satisfying and worth the $5 for a big slice. 6/5. Service was incredibly helpful and fast. They weren't that busy but had at least 4 people behind the counter belong out, so despite the line it moved very fast. I'm glad I don't live that far away, now I know I have to come back soon, especially now that Alpine Village is basically gone. Don't sleep on this place, it's fantastic.

Stopped at Mattern this afternoon for our favorite sandwich a Pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut YUM!! Their sandwiches are the best around! And as an added bonus, they have an awesome deli with a great selection of sausages, pastrami, deli meats and cheeses. One of our favorite sausages is the Gyulai which comes in both regular and spicy both are really good! It's kind of like a slim jim. We like to take it on our road trips along with string cheese and crackers it's a great on the go snack. And if you get a sandwich, be sure to pick up a side to go with your sandwich my side of choice is the coleslaw, but they also have a good German potato salad. The sandwiches are very generous and my hubby and I usually share one sandwich. Just a side note They also have some baked goodies like a pretzel or turnover but they sell out quickly. Enjoy!!

This place is amazing!! Great place to check out for some authentic German food and imported goods (beers, breads, candies, etc). The sandwiches here were so good and hearty. They don't skimp on the filling! Absolutely loved the Reuben sandwich with the thinly sliced corned beef and homemade sauerkraut. The sandwiches come with pickles as well! The German potato salad was also amazing. They also have homemade breads and sausage packs for sale along with their deli section. Will definitely be coming back here to try more of their menu items and purchase more German imports! HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHECKING THIS PLACE OUT!

Ive been going to Mattern since I was in high school. It was always the go to in my family German foods. Service is always good, even when it is crowded and the cold cuts are always fantastic.
