Well this place continues to impress me. Stopped in today for some sandwiches and meats and was very pleasantly surprised. It's a small storefront that shares a parking lot with a Weinerschnitzel...seems a little ironic, because despite the Germanic heritage the two couldn't be more different. Inside you'll find a few tables for dine in, and a few short aisles full of pickles, sauces, mustards, beers, chocolates, snacks and other things from Germany. Stopped at Mattern this afternoon for our favorite sandwich a Pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut YUM!! Their sandwiches are the best around! And as an added bonus, they have an awesome deli with a great selection of sausages, pastrami, deli meats and cheeses. One of our favorite sausages is the Gyulai which comes in both regular and spicy both are really good! It's kind of like a slim jim. We like to take it on our road trips along with string cheese and crackers it's a great on the go snack. And if you get a sandwich, be sure to pick up a side to go with your sandwich my side of choice is the coleslaw, but they also have a good German potato salad. If you are looking for a authentic German deli, then this is it. Who would have ever guessed that a non Nondescript building in the city of orange would be home to the best German deli in Orange County. As soon as you walk in you can clearly see you are in heaven. German Salami, Cheeses, bratwurst, knockwurst etc. Fresh bread, pretzels and many German food products and of course German beer! You can get sandwiches to go or if you can find a seat in the small table area, you can dine in. The staff always work hard to keep you happy. You will often hear people placing orders in German. Everything I have purchased is outstanding. Our favorite is the German salami.

This restaurant is fantastic! It’s a great spot to enjoy authentic German cuisine and find imported goods like beers, breads, candies, and more. The sandwiches are delicious and generous in size — they really don't hold back on the filling! I absolutely loved the Reuben sandwich, which featured thinly sliced corned beef and homemade sauerkraut. Plus, each sandwich comes with pickles! The German potato salad was also exceptional. They offer homemade breads and sausage packs for sale in addition to their deli selection. I’ll definitely be returning to try more items from their menu and to buy more German imports! So good!! This is the joint, where you skip breakfast on the weekend, just so you can chow down those sandwiches in the biggest mouth full! There is also a small specialty grocery store attached to the deli. You may find some interesting seasoning, and marzipan candy here. They keep it homemade and hearty. Come for the food and leave happy!

I visited for lunch and ordered the smoked pork chop sandwich, while my wife opted for the German cold cut sandwich. Both sandwiches were served on hoagie rolls. They've recently switched their bread supplier to OC Baking, which is a significant upgrade! I highly recommend this place! We’ll definitely be back!

What's not to like...it's German! Their deli and sandwich's are great. Huge. And very bready. They have a lot Of old school german grocery's (canned goods and jar) German beer. Yes please. And super friendly staff. I like this spot. Can't have too much bread. But their deli meats rock!

Took home a pound of Bierwurst. It was slimy, mushy, a bit gelatinous feeling and quite unpleasant all around. Will be sticking with Continental Sausage products when I can find them . Get a sample before you conclusively purchase. Reserva una mesa ahora

Ive been going to Mattern since I was in high school. It was always the go to in my family German foods. Service is always good, even when it is crowded and the cold cuts are always fantastic.

Everything at this place is fantastic. The new owners have really done a wonderful job since taking over. Be sure to try the smoked pork chop sandwich!
