after the journey from pau to oloron ste marie, without finding the right place to lunch, decided to press to navarrenx. mid november is the city very quiet, but the terrace here swung with many French couples and families sunny day so. it seemed a good place. we ordered the menu du jour at 14€50. Entree was itself a buffet with many salat options, ham, pate, foie gras, cousin, deviled eier, etc. nice to choose a sample. the fish plate served with rice and a zucchini soufflé was perfect, firm and fresh. but the stuffed bark plate with potatoes in a wonderful sauce was fantastic. tender and tasteful. both served wein and hot brot. Dessert options were a chocolate torrough in a vanilla sauce or a pistachio and chocolate parfait. sat with espresso. one of our favorite lands. sitting in the sunny terrace through the old walls made it all perfect!
This is in a lovely location, just outside the centre of the village, but only 2 minutes walk away from everything. They have a daily plat de jours which is extremely reasonably priced at around 13 euros per person (starter, main, desert and coffee). If...you don't fancy this there is a full menu to choose from which includes a selection of burgers, about 6 other main courses (eg salmon, duck etc) and a daily special. The service is good and you can either eat outside under the covered area or inside. There is a small eating area downstairs and a much larger one upstairs. All in all a very good place to eat.
Nice place, very french and favoured by locals and tourists, always busy which is usually a good indication of quality and value. Had lunch there which was very good value at 13 euro including wine, we did have to wait quite a while to order...and our waitress a little frosty (we thought it was because we were english even tho our french very good but she was just the same with the locals !! don't let this put you off, its well worth a visit.
I loved our meal here on the terrace. eat excellent and cheap. no long wait for the food. only one thought that the waitress took our food order, but did not ask us what we wanted to drink. food arrived, we asked for a drink. She said she would come back in a minute, we were halfway through our meal before we got our glass weeping.
