Referred to L'Amiral by friends who'd dined there many times over the years we were went with them for lunch.... the service was charming, amusing and very friendly. We had the house wine which was perfectly drinkable and while the menu was very large and very varied we all we all went for the specials being lamb shanks except one who opted for the Salad de chevre chaud . The lamb was perfectly tender and delicious.....and filling! Served with a choice of fries, new potatoes or rice and mixed vegetables it was a tasty home style meal, no Michelin stars here but no pretence either. The host was delightful and the setting very pleasant. A nice place for a snack or full meal.

My husband and I have eaten here many times, when we owned a boat in the area. The owner, Gilles, is front of house. His wife,Sylvie, runs the kitchen. The service is colorful and friendly, even if you're not a regular. We love the atmosphere outside, sitting on the terrace under plane trees, with the Saone River flowing by.It is not a gourmet food experience. We think sticking with the simple food is best - salads, fries and steak haché (minced steak) are good bets. It's a brasserie with soul. If you're in St. Jean, stop in, share a carafe of wine or have a beer, and sit back and enjoy Gilles' entertainment.

Well situated, mainly outside seating although currently does have a small and very simple inside seating area. The owner is a fun guy and the food CAN be quite good. Honest and hard working, the owner's wife does the cooking and he does his show out front. Like nearly all cafes/restaurants in rural France very quiet outside of season - end May/beginning Sept, Open lunchtimes and evenings. Slightly pricier than some of the other places in town, probably slightly better food IMHO

Stopped here every year, our fourth visit. Can fully appreciate the changes made, does not change the really friendly welcome, good beer and wine, snacks fresh and good value for money.
