We were staying at Villa Borghese where the food is excellent. But we thought we'd try dinner in town and L'Ardoise looked charming with its shop and eclectic merchandise - as well as restaurant. But when we returned in the evening they seated us on the street outside an orthopaedic shoe shop vitrine. We asked to be near the restaurant we thought we were eating at so they moved us inside where we were alone - in July. The menu seemed interesting - adventurous for French menus outside Paris. This perhaps should have been a warning sign. Still, everyone outside on the terrace seemed happy and interesting seafood things were arriving on platters. So we ordered one of the flashy starters that was a mixture of things on an ardoise blackboard. This was a problem because the dips had nothing to dip into them except six skinny breadsticks (we were four), They eventually brought bread in rounds of sliced baguette - but only five tiny pieces, twice. So the dips remained unfinished and I didn't want to run my finger through the little bowls. The fishy thing was unremarkable and I'm not sure what it was. But hey, we had lovely mains to follow. Ick. I ordered a Caesars Salad. This was unspeakable. There was an overcooked hard boiled egg on the half shell each end of the plate. Rubber. Then the salad dressing was dumped in a lump on the top leaf. All the leaves were WET! There were some crutons and shavings of utterly tasteless parmesan. The recipe was not even Caesars Salad. There were a few bits and pieces of other things in there - and no hint of anchovy. Oh, there was BREADED CHICKEN on top, straight from the icebox. It tasted disgusting and I left nearly everything on the plate, though I was now starved. My other half ordered a lamb filet which came so rare it was, well geez, hardly dead. It had some soggy veg. Our son ordered a tuna on noodles which tasted slightly acidic for some reason - the tuna would have been divine if it had just something else on the plate to flavour it! It was also quite raw but we just figured the chef likes sushi. However, it lacked any flavour. And I can't remember what our other grown son had but he too didn't get on with it. Normally one would save the day with dessert but this was so lousy I just knew the chef, who looks about twelve, would screw that up too. He came around to the table to see how it all was. I told him - very gently - and he told me eight out of ten of his guests like the Caesar Salad his way and not the traditional way - and he said he likes to do things differently. I'll say. So we headed up the road for an artisan sorbet and gelatos and proper coffees, elsewhere.By the way, it was 110 euros for the four of us with only a beer and a glass of wine. So annoying as every single other meal, from picnics on the lake to five star restaurants was great that week away.

Très bon accueil malgré un gros cafouillage en cuisine. On a failli avoir notre dessert avant les plats. Heureusement l intervention du patron a tout rétabli rapidement. Nos plats étaient très savoureux. J avais choisi en dessert une panacotta . Succulente !

Service très lent et serveurs débordés. À éviter avec de jeunes enfants. Dommage car notre plat et le vin étaient bons mais l'attente nous a découragée pour le dessert.
