High above Leucate, overlooking the Mediterranean, in an architecturally distinctive building, Le Grand Cap makes a statement: we aspire to be a star restaurant. The service was attentive, skilled, and unobtrusive, though we on occasion had to ask a server to skeak louder for our non-native French speaker ears. (English is no barrier here, however.). The menu is fish-centric, with excellent ingredients, cooked perfectly , sometimes undercooked intentionally, to bring out a textural element. Langousines, octopus, rouget, merlu, with vegetable accompaniments well-matched and sometimes surprising (coco beans). Chef seems to employ a signature element of thick vegetable purée (peas purée under the rouget,) which mixes with the sauce only as you eat it. Loved it. A touch of fish eggs here and there provides a salty pop.Chef keeps his sauces restrained, though flavorful, perhaps to to avoid overpowerng the delicate fish. Sauces could have been just a touch more intense, perhaps. The wine list is excellent, largely regional, with good selections at reasnable prices. Le Grand Cap achieves its Michelin star aspirations, at a reasonable price point. Highly recemmended for fine dining in a spectacular setting.
