When we booked out trip to Collioure we logged onto TripAdvisor and checked out the local restaurants. Le Neptune was one that really caught our eye and we were looking forward to visiting during our stay.There were 6 in our party and when we first arrived we were shown into the dining room. This was an almost completely glass room that was incredibly hot. There were blinds down so we couldn't really see out and although the door was open and one of 3 fans running it was like sitting in a green house. Incredibly hot. We went here for the lunch menu. A 3 course menu at reasonable price. We enjoyed all the great dishes - see the pictures. Service was swift and accurate.Also they were able to accomodate a different desert outside the set menu for my daughter. The only thing were i think we may have had a slight misunderstanding was whether the lamb was 'a point' or 'rosé'. My wife wanted red/pink which is medium, or, in our understanding, 'a point'. When the lamb arrived it was rather well done. The taste was still great and it was really tender. We came here to end our week in Collioure on a high note - and they certainly delivered. The restaurant is situated overlooking the bay and castle, and catches the full brilliance of the setting sun, making it a great place to sit and eat in the evening. The food was all perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and extremely tasty! A particular highlight was the mushroom and truffle mousse - it almost evaporated in the mouth, leaving just the flavours dancing on the tongue. This was our first meal in Collioure, and it did not disappoint. We got there very early by French standards, and were the first people seated. We had a lovely view, and the food was excellent. I had a fois gras to start with green apples & fresh apple juice - the acidity and sweetness of the apple complimented the fois gras phenomenally. For my main course I had grilled turbot over cuttlefish ink pasta, and it was exceptional. But be aware, if this is a first date, your mouth will turn black - so you know it's real cuttlefish ink! Had high expectations of this restaurant as it came highly recommended. My dining companions were happy enough with their meals. I had veal, which was tough as old boots and looked like an inexpensive cut of beef. I complained and the response from the waiter was a very disinterested shrug of the shoulders. I really don't think it was veal it was a red meat and correct me if I'm wrong but veal ,in my experience, is pale in colour. I would not return.
I have been going to collioure for over twenty years and have ate at this restaurant many times, and it has been extremely good.Four of us went last night, the food is now average and service is terrible. I complained before the deserts had arrived. This is only time I have ever walked out of a restaurant. We had been told it was not as good by our friends.
I'm not going to go into detail about all the small things that were wrong with La Neptune, save to say that in isolation each one may seem manageable. But when you add them all up, they conspire to reduce this great opportunity for an amazing dinner in a most beautiful spot, into a disappointing, lacklustre, grumpy experience. Maybe we were unlucky.
