My wife and I happened upon this gem while touring the area around Bordeaux. This is a genuine local restaurant where the waiter knew several of the customers and where you can call ahead to order one of their special homemade desserts. There were two large groups of office workers seated ahead of us and the staff was hustling to get everyone served, but they still took the time to be friendly and helpful. I don't know whether it is a family-run restaurant, but it had the feel of one. I ordered a glass of white wine, not realizing that a small bottle of red wine was included with the meal. But the waiter didn't charge me for the glass of wine. He also gave us a free plate of sliced cold saus...
La Brede is in the heart of the Graves wine region. As a result of reading previous posts we decided to try Les Charmilles for lunch. The place was very busy with locals, always a good sign. It would be fair to say it is a simple honest establishment, not high end haute cuisine, but for a lunch menu without frills, it hit the mark. We had the menu du jour which consisted of soup, charcuterie salad, roast beef then choice of dessert all for 13 euros with a 1/2 bottle of vin rouge included. The wine menu, whilst not extensive, is well priced. You could tell that the food was home cooked and tasty. This is a pleasant restaurant where you will leave feeling happy and content and not having paid...
One of my favourites around where we live. Uninspiring exterior on the roundabout in La Brede, and simple rustic interior, but good honest tasty food the way French food was 30 years ago. Everything is made in house rather than being bought in and reheated, which sadly is becoming rarer in France (less than 30% of restaurants), mainly because of unworkable labour laws. The daily €12 menu is a bargain for 3 courses, including wine and all the staff (family) are charming and welcoming. Mainly locals rather than tourists as not an obvious destination, but well worth a visit if you fancy inexpensive, simple but tasty food, and you are in the area.

Would love to review the food, it looked delicious but we sat at the table the waitress told us to for 45 min without being acknowledged before we left. It was really weird and the worst we’ve ever been treated around the world. The restaurant was pretty full, but seriously. Even when we tried to ask her for menus, she totally ignored us. Maybe she was having a bad day, but this was unacceptable.
