L'escale Village - Reservar una mesa

We stayed at a nearby hotel in Chateauroux so we could go here. It was quite busy at 8pm on a Tuesday in September. We were ushered into the posher restaurant side (there only seemed to be male truckers in the brasserie). We thought we 'd go upmarket a bit with the EUR31 menu. We had snail and foie gras starters, no problem, plus a pichet of local red (cheap but freezing). For the main course the choices were a bit limited if you don 't like tete de veau, andouillette etc but we both went for the entrecote steak. We asked for medium (we both like it medium rare) and thought the counter offer of a point? might be about right. There was another waitress with reasonable English but ours didn 't...

This is a large Routier that grew out of a more modest establishment. It’s success is well-deserved, because it is very good at what it does, and well-priced. There is a bar which is used almost entirely by lorry-drivers: but if you are happy to stand, no one will object to your presence. If your French is good, it is an opportunity to learn a little about the routine and pressures that the many long haul truck drivers in France experience. Adjacent to the bar is what is in effect an old fashioned Relai Routier, with menus, dishes of the day, and companionship. Have just submitted the review for the l'escale against the courtpaille by accident. The escale is brilliant a mix of relais, bistro and restaurant in one building. Food. Service and value were all excellent. Large choice on the menu plus an a la carte. Just off the motorway so easy to find Will definitely be back.

Fair place, good fresh and home made French food. The menu of the day was varied and service very helpful. Next time we will take more time to review our order as we rushed through the menu, but all choices were good.

It's sometimes hard to find a good restaurant in unfamiliar territory. But leave it to the truckers that pass through Chatearoux to point us towards this...
