These days, people associate the Latin Quarter with condos, chain restaurants and cafes, and summer festival events. However, until the early-mid 2000s, the Latin Quarter was filled with Bohemian jazz clubs, used bookstores, quirky shops, punks, and student pubs. There isn't much of that scene left: the artists, poets, and musicians, have moved to less expensive neighbourhoods to the north and east. If you want to experience a bit of the vintage Latin quarter, get excellent vegetarian food, listen to some music, and chat with local intellectuals and musicians, go to L'Escalier. The food is vegetarian and consists of sandwiches, salads, curries, and tapas and ranges in quality from good to ex...

We had selected this restaurant for two reasons, it was vegetarian and has live music. The eatery is on the edge of both the Gay Village and The Latin Quarter and close to one of Montreal's universities, a vibrant atmosphere. We did have a little difficulty finding it at first, we had walked right past without realizing but when we walked on the opposite side of the road we found the sign above the stairs- of course, should have mentally translated! Up we went to find a largely empty place, but it was only 6.30 We immediately loved the eclectic colourful funky style. If you are looking for gleaming cleanliness don't come here but if you want authentic French-Canadian hipster feel this is for...

On Monday nights, we heard that L'Escalier has live Quebecois music, so we got there at 8 for beer, vegetarian fare (we're not vegetarian, but the food was great), and music. At 8:30 musicians started coming in, and by 10 there were 20 people playing on and off the stage. It was an amazing night of terrific music, beautiful young people (and no one making us feel bad in our 50's), and just plain delight. Check online to see what's playing, and go, go go! Wonderful place. Know that you have to get up a flight of stairs (hence the name). Prices are very cheap: this is clearly a place that works well for college students. Loved L'Escalier. Next time we're in Montreal, we won't miss it.

A friend recommended this place to us as she knows we love live music. Little did we know! 1) The musicians were amazing! We caught 2 different bands each with unique style and beautiful musicianship.2) The beer was great and reasonably priced! We had eaten dinner so did not partake in food.3) The PEOPLE were the best. This is the first place in the world that I really felt was a microcosm of what I think the world should be. Show up, love who you love, chat, relax, enjoy, people watch, dance, draw and do your thing. It felt like a safe place to just be yourself. I danced with lots of different people, laughed, had people help me learn French and drank too much beer. Check it out! Reserva una mesa ahora

1. It's off the beaten path, and appears to be filled with locals;2. It has great local beer;3. Everything on the menu is vegetarian, much to the relief of cruelty-free patrons who are used to just one acceptable menu option;4. Your table number is an animal figurine;5. Cash only, but an ATM is on site in the red room with the couches;6. The live music was awesome!Thank you for the most memorable experience on our trip!

So we visited because from the reviews this place sounded fun. The place has many rooms which are decorated with mismatched tables and chairs. I love the idea of this decor but really the place seemed filthy to me, everything was sticky and grubby and covered in dust and stains. We had one beer and left. Maybe it attracts a crowd with its cheap beer but it's not worth it to me.

Very helpful, likeable, bilingual cool-people work here, at the top of the skinny escalier (staircase). It's a great intro to the Montréal foodie/indie-art scene, with live performances and many beers, including volume discounts on pitchers.

Lovely living room experience with weekly live music concerts! The place is divided in five or more areas with different furniture, some with enough space to dance a little, some perfect for talking and catching up with some friends! Reserva una mesa ahora

I have been living in Montreal since 1980, and never knew this place existed until last week-end. Pleasantly surprised by such an eclectic atmosphere, variety of ages, ethnicities and music styles!
