The Magpie And Stump is a great added attraction to the historic South Australian State Heritage town of Mintaro.My wife and I had three days stay in the town and visited the hotel every day for a chat with the publican Lindon and downed a few beers in the front bar. The hotel is Heritage listed along with the town, and has a lovely front beer garden to relax and have a drink.On our last night in Mintaro we dined at the Magpie and our meals of chicken and veal schnitzels were well cooked and delicious. I called to book a table for dinner to be told the pub closes at 730pm on a Saturday night. I made a booking for 7pm. We arrived and were greeted by a man who appeared to be serving, cooking, running the bar and filling takeaway orders.We waited 20-25 minutes and didnt even see the man of all trades again, we didnt get to order dinner, not even order a drink. Given there was only 5-10 minutes until close and another table of 6 people also waiting we left with 2 hungry grumpy children in search of food. It was really disappointing.
We arrived at lunchtime and went to the bar to order a drink and food, to be told by the grumpy manager(?) that if we wanted food "you'll have a long wait if you want food as there are eight orders before you!" That made up our mind.....bought one beer and left. Sorry but your attitude needs improving. Something like - "sorry, but as I am short staffed today there may be a little wait, but we are doing our best"........would have been better.
A group of us booked a table on Friday night. Despite the fact they knew we were coming at 7.30, staff were not very welcoming, rudely telling us the kitchen was closing soon. On delivery, the food was average-good pub food and well priced. When we went back the next day the barman was quite rude when we wanted to buy a takeaway bottle, and had there been another pub in town, we would have walked away!

Easter Sunday was a busy day in Mintaro, pronounced Min-tair-oh by the locals. As we wandered through the grounds of the Magpie Stump Hotel they were serving lunch and it looked good so we decided to order 2 burgers. The service was very slow and about 45 minutes later we received our burgers which were very tasty.

Friday afternoon - great people, lovely pub. Friday night - decent pub food, friendly service. Very nice. Saturday afternoon - awful. Rude and difficult barman. Very unpleasant. Won't be going back.
If someone took over this pub and renovated it to bring out all its charm and history, accompanied by good service and food, many more people would enjoy a visit to Mintaro.

Great country pub, quiet afternoon beer with a few locals and the landlord. Good range of beers, cider and local wine.
We have stayed in Montaro a few tings and the Pub meal is always been great. Friendly staff and pretty good service.
