Food is quite good. But there are other, fatal, problems. Reservations don't mean that. Arrive, take what is available. If only two persons, that can easily mean three feet from the door, or aside the hot pizza oven. Parties of four fare better and maybe their reservations are taken seriously. Space is small. Tonight was my fourth and last visit. Two years ago, reserved a table for our anniversary. Arrived, no table reserved, only the one by the door available. Turned on my heel and went to a better resto (Don Marco's), where we had a nice experience. Decided to give Matteo's another chance. April 2016I want to tell you a little story about my experience. I'm a little slow about how to get the word out but I never thought about trip advisor. We had a house fire and we found ourselves living in a motel. The first couple of days were terribly busy. Nothing was on scheduled it was later in the evening we found ourselves hungry. Driving downtown Welland I saw Matteo's. I had eaten there before and found the food excellent. My husband and I went in the door and I asked to see a menu. I've eaten at matteos 3 times.. all three times I've left dissapointed. Not with the food but the service . And the restaurant is very small . I got pasta the first time I went I ordered a pasta with add on chicken breast and specifically asked not for the chicken to be cut. Both times I ordered chicken with my meal.i asked for it not to be cut and both times the cook cut the chicken and absolutely killed it . ( not in a good way) it was like biting into a piece of rubber it was so overcooked and dry.cut into a bunch of little pieces. Thankfully the pasta was good. have made a reservation for a birthday dinner. we had to wait with a few others for half an hour to get a place. we sat without menus and sat there for about then asked what we want to drink with...no wine menu? we ordered a drink and then menus were brought to us. the appetizer came fast and was excellent, but then we had to wait at least more minutes for our meal and no offer of wein fill or water. we also ran into a friend and her family who had a reservation and ended when the wait was too long to get her table. to the luck was eating delicious and so fresh, prepared for it, but unfortunately the waiting and service was disappointed. I agree with the other reviews - this little gem in Welland is jut wonderful, and really, should get more hype. The other night my husband and I went out for a date night, we had a nice small table by the wood fire.. I loved watching the chef in the open kitchen and the great wood smell throughout. The owner is clearly present, and you can tell! They also pour you a generous glass of wine which I appreciate, when most restaurants give you a dribble or $10. Service was friendly and prompt, ambiance was lively and fun and the prices are more than reasonable. What a great night out! Keep it going guys!
This restaurant has it all. Fabulous food and service. The owner really cares as to how the customer likes his or her food. He is careful with gluten intolerant customers and the quality of the food is always top notch. We are looking forward to his new restaurant opening as well.
