My partner and I recently moved to Gardena and were looking for a really good, tasty and tasteful food restaurant. We tried a few spots, but they didn't fulfill the taste we had been looking for. We drove past Matthew's restaurant every day for a whole year and decided to try and man Oh man!! I'm glad we did this because it wasn't disappointed. The food is delicious, the taste and the spices are on point and Michelle the host/Owner is a valuable jewel. Such a nice woman and has great southern hospitality. I was craving Catfish Grits after having oatmeal for breakfast (smh). Matthews served up hot fish and creamy grits that hit the spot! The portion size was just right with 2 fish fillets. The food was served fresh and piping hot. One thing to note is that some reviews mention the lack of salt in the dishes. I personally found that the grits were a bit under seasoned, but I actually prefer that to overly salty food. I appreciate the "new school" approach to soul food that doesn't go overboard with salt. It's important to remember that too much salt and sugar can be harmful, as seen with Big Mama. So, overall, a satisfying meal at Matthews!

Easily one of the BEST, RELIABLE, CONSISTENT, QUALITY restaurants. Check in ASAP before the big come the hard to get in place. I've been eating here since 2020 ordering multiple meals at one time breakfast lunch and dinner always fresh flavorful and great portions. Don't sleep they also have a drink menu that will blow u away. The decor is like going home to mom's house and the staff is just as sweet and welcoming. They earned my business. Military and first responders friendly as well

It's definitely a hidden gem. Don't be fooled from outside. Take a chance and get excited with this delicious soul food. The seafood plate was enough for 2, the Krave mix (Kollard Greens and Kohl) left you more to wish, and the Mac and the cheese were not short anyway. Something to remember. Reserva una mesa ahora

Michele was great. Made a delicious **** Mary for my friend. My friend wanted a Mexican coffee. Next time Michele will have the ingredients. Food was good. Lemon pie for breakfast dessert was great. I had two cups of coffee. We will definitely be back.

I had breakfast delivery. The grits were under seasoned as was the chicken wings. I order grits with cheese and that?s basically where I got my flavor. Off the top. The crust of the chicken was seasoned, just not the chicken itself.

Excellent as always. Great food, great service. Michelle and the Team are very pleasant and make you feel right at home. My go to for the Oxtail dinner plate with collard greens and fried okra. Enjoy. Richard ?Makoa? Sr.

My boyfriend and I are on vacation in California and were in search of some soul food that was black-owned. The food was excellent and the service was also great. We will definitely be returning! Food: 5/5

For the first time customer, food was fresh and delicious. I ordered catfish, green collar, Mac and cheese and fries. No complaints! Up!
