we started with 3 rehearsals that were dipped, pitta brot. all very good. we also have schish kabob steak. it took an hour to get our food, but the rehearsals need to be cured and we also got suppensalat that helped supplement. I have the tomato basilikum soup, which was the best tomato soup I ever had, and they served it was also a delicious brot. we also had an excellent service in the middle time, with friendly staff and a attentive waitress. I regret not posting this sooner, as Timothy deserves recognition. Helena is not traditionally known for its food scene. The few unique restaurants that open up tend to shutter within a year or so. This place is an exception and a bit of an institution. A bit on the expensive side for Helena but not too bad relative to most other cities. We were there for 2 hours and it felt like an hour. The experience was so enjoyable that the time flew by (though I also have my company to thank for that). We were seated quickly and greeted by Tim. From the appetizers to dessert everything was outstanding and the service was spot on. The Lamb Brochettes appetizer was phenomenal cooked to perfection the salad and pickled onion served with it was delicious. I could have eaten two of those for dinner.. Then we did the appetizer combo with Baba-Ghannouj, Tapenade, and Bisara. My wife had the seafood linguine and other than the Calamari being quite tough everything was tender, succulent and tasty. I had the Baharat Rubbed Rib-Eye prepared Medium, it was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. We were so stuffed we had to get the desert to go. Sal's was the best restaurant in Helena; it took a while for the locals to adopt Trattoria style dining, but once that occurred you could count on Montana sized portions of the best Italian in the Rockies. The atmosphere was amazing with murals of Italian streets providing a glimpse into Sal's boyhood city. Sadly this treasured gem closed in 2004. It has been replaced by the good Mediterranean Grill, (the pizzas are excellent).
While visiting our daughter in Helena, she recommended this restaurant to us. There were plenty of gluten-free options on the menu. The steak we ordered was cooked perfectly and the portion size was large enough for two people. The grape leaves appetizer was excellent. We would definitely give this place 5 stars!
Great food, a fun atmosphere, and impeccable service. Ellie waited on my friend and I for a late supper on a Monday evening she provided excellent recommendations on the menu and was gracious with us when we managed to stay after closing. Thanks for the great experience!
